Default Tyre Size Help

Just bought a 1992 4.0 Litre Coupe Facelift in the UK and looking to change the tyres (235/60/R15 98W) since the rear ones are a cheap budget brand which look chunky and ridiculous.
The front ones are the Pirelli P600 which have been on the car for many years with signs of cracking and were highlighted on the MOT.
On trawling the thread most owners have 16" wheels but mine are 15" lattice type which look pretty nice.
As I've found out 235/60/15 is a very difficult tyre to source and expensive if you manage to find therefore looking for another 15" size.
On replacement tyres my first thought is to keep the original look and buy quality correctly rated tyres which handle well, don't want chunky etc.
Given the 235/60/15 is almost non existent to source, any recommendations for the 15" wheel along with a tyre brand that keeps the original look of the car ?
P.S. The chap I bought the car from was considering changing to 225/60/15 although I've no idea if this is an ideal choice therefore any comments/recommendations are appreciated.

RBC,

You're in the UK, aren't you?

I think you'll struggle for choice on 235/60 15 as you've found. There are Nankangs at about £100 and then Bridgestones at about £230.

You might have to really look around or else consider changing tyre width or rim size. It's why a lot of early facelift owners move to 16" as you've seen.

Cheers

Paul

The overall diameter of 235/60-15 is 26.1”. If you go to 215/65-15 you have a 26.0” diameter, only 0.4% smaller and you may find you have more choice and find a V-rated tire. Or 205/70-15 (26.3” dia.).

225/60-15 is 25.6” diameter, nearly 2% off.

High RBC,

Looks like you are going through the same debate that I did before I eventually decided to change to 16" wheels.

I found the following web calculator useful in comparing various rim / tyre options. Can't guarantee it's accuracy although I did a few hand checks and came up with similar numbers.

Tire Size Calculator - Compare Tire Sizes | Tacoma World

Hope it helps and good luck in your search. Let us know what you go for.

Cheers,
LeeP

Lee,
Thanks for that.
I didn't realise how difficult it was to get like for like tyres.
Had a look at 16" replacement wheels but for the Lattice type anything between £1200-£1500 which need refurbed and then new tyres it's a heck of a price.
I'll study the calculator and see how I get on.
Just don't want chunky ugly tyres.

The UK insurers require cars that are capabale for higher speeds to have tyres that are rated for those speeds, even if thjose speeds are never attained by the driver. So, just as a caution, while there are loads of van tyres etc etc in 15 inch that would fit, they are not useable.
AFAIK, there are no 15 inch correctly rated tyres available in the UK except for the wildly expensive ones mentioned earlier in the thread.
Like Lee, I went to the 16 inch "modern starfish" facelift-fitted OEM rims years ago in order to get decent tyres at sensible prices.

While these tires are currently out of stock and rather expensive, there is some commentary of XJ-S tire sizing on the page that may be of interest. https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/tyr...elli-p600.html

Default Tyres Wheel Replacement

Starting to go down the avenue of sourcing 16 inch Lattice type wheels and came across a set which are a possibility.
The chap says they are 8 x 16 from a 1994 XJ40, have the Jaguar stamp on them and should be a straight fit.
On looking at the pictures and comparing them with other Lattice wheels I noticed a slight difference in the Lattice pattern.
The top picture is the one for sale (slightly different pattern), the red pen also shows where the Lattice pattern is 'filled in'.
The bottom picture is of my original 15 inch and I think other 16's.
Any idea if the ones from the XK40 are original and a compatible/straight fit ?

They definitely look like the 16" lattice that was fitted. The "filled-in" bit is correct. They may have been painted / refurbished as the filled in bit was dark originally. They are a straight fit on an XJS.

Cheers

From my notes: The part number for the 16X8” wheel is MMB6115AA.
The 16X7” wheel is MHB6115AA.

Either would be a direct fit. The part number should be on the reverse of the wheel. Ask the seller for a photo of the part numbers.
