Noobie got a dead XJS :-(
Hi folks, I am a newbie here, I have just been given a 1997 XJS 4.0, very nice but dead as a dodo
When I turn the ignition on the dash lights come up but I don't hear the petrol pump running, turning to start does nothing. The car has been laid up for about 3 years.
I have no idea where to start but suspect there may be an imobiliser problem. The central locking works but that's as far as I have got.
Anybody got any pointers?
Thanks in advance,
Arthur.

You don't have a 97 XJS because they stopped making them in 96.
Get Kirby Palm's "Book" http://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/XJS_help.pdf
It's a huge download but your can decode your VIN and from that
all your equipment. Gobs of practical hints (including circuits) in the file.
The immobilizer is in the trunk adjacent to the battery, per the book.
jag-lovers.com and jcna.com (Jaguar Clubs of North America) also have
forums and there's lots of data available.
If you have a 96, you have a potential daily driver with outstanding
reliability.

I would personally check all the relays and fuses to make sure they are good.
I'm not sure if the immobiliser will stop the fuel pump from working just as well as stopping the starter from doing it's thing. In my XJ6 I have neutral start switch problems... I'm wondering if it could also be another problem with your car? Have you shifted the car out of park and back to park then try starting it? If that doesn't work on my car I can also hold the key forward and within 5-10 seconds it will start to crank over (probably doesn't have to do with the neutral start switch - but I'm not sure).
Hopefully this helps.
My uncle has a '96 and it is in near mint condition. It's a very nice car to drive and definitely gets a lot of looks.
