Your car has a proprietary round on board diagnostic port that normal handheld scanners can't interface with. You'll need to find someone with a working Jaguar PDU to read out anything.
Some engine codes can usually be read using the trip computer, if your car is so equipped.

I'm assuming that your "1994" XJS has a VIN lower than 194775?
Jaguar fitted OBD when the AJ16 engine was introduced for the 1994.75 MY in April 1994. I have a 1994-manufactured car like this.
If your VIN is before 194775, then you have the AJ6 engine and the proprietary Jaguar port , as Jon has mentioned.
