Default ODBII Tools Giving Me Grief

Hi Team,

New to the forum here. As posted in the newbies section, I am taking care of my mother-in-laws 96 XJS convertible with the 4.0. I am having a heck of a time getting any ODBII scanners to work. I have tried my cheap Artilink 200 and my ODBII cable adapter hooked up to my laptop using FORSCan but they won't connect. I "think" this is the first year where ODBII was used or in the middle being used. I'm fairly certain that my cheap tool is just that, cheap and isn't compatible. Anyone know of a tried and true scanner that works with this year and model?

Thanks!

Mike

Mike,

The XJS is not fully OBDII-compliant, BUT from 1994 onwards it has a degree of compatibility. My 94-built car works with the cheapest £4 Bluetooth OBDII adapter. With the Torque Pro phone app I can reset engine codes and see quite a bit of data. If you want full control you really need a laptop running IDS /SDS. It all depends what you want to do.

Good luck

Paul

Thank you Paul for the reply. All I really need at this point is to read DTC codes. I will check in to the Torque Pro phone app as you mentioned.

Thanks again,

Mike

Even my cheapie u480 will connect and pull codes. 96 is probably the second year Jaguar put OBD2 into action. It’s certainly helpful when it throws out codes, it just doesn’t like to dole out codes often.

Thats why I loves me some OBDI. Simple, and obnoxious, but simple.
