Default OK, what happened? No power to fuel pumps

I drove the car home about a month ago. Ran out of gas a block from the house, put gas in, fired right up. Parked it.

The ONLY thing i did was fix the high pressure fuel pump leak at the inlet hose. Nothing else.

Went to turn on car, no pumps at all.

I jumpered the pumps, and both work/make noise when connected directly to 12V.

How does something fail just sitting there?

I will try changing the pump relay.

On the H&E two pump cars, it looks like both pumps are controlled by the same relay?

I seem to recall reading that when the pumps are worked on,a nd the line to the high pressure pump drained it can be very difficult to start the car.

With the main pump running, the car doesn't want to start. it does start with starting fluid, but then dies.

FWIW, I have found several inline, non-factory fuses/fuse holders here and there, the wiring has been fussed with.

The 1989 wiring diagram i have doesn't look like the inertia switch is connected to the pumps directly, but rather to an ECU input.

what year model is your xj? 88? i'm looking at your list of cars....the 88 efi system is slightly different to the 89, the 89 schematic has 2 types of efi system so what is the VIN # of your model?......88 has a feed back inhibitor relay in the system & inertia switch feed is connected to the main switching relay...........year & vin # will help........ if 88 model you also have a 45 sec/ timer in the pump relay system

Model year 1988. Built 11/87

What does this 45 second timer do, what is its purpose?

I am not finding an inertial switch with a plunger down by the drivers/LH side kick panel. There is a metal bracket about 2' square with a screw sticking out the rear of the kickpanel, but nothing attached to it.

Thanks,
Doug

The inertial cut off switch is normally on the passenger side B pillar just under the dash pad.
Have you possibly nudged the vacuum hose going to the ECU.
Every once in a while it's a good idea the check that it's getting vacuum.

Hmmm. My official XJS repair manual said its on the drivers side. Though drivers side could be either side, depending on LH or RH drive. Edit, I see my manual is for a RH drive vehicle.

I will look on the other side.

Doug,
inertia switch is on the left hand side regardless of left or right hand drive, if your car is an 87 build then most likely it will be one of 3 version of EFI, you need to post here what the vin # is then i can post an extract of the correct EFI system....hopefully the efi system wasn't upgraded to a later model......

----JC146775 is the last of the VIN.

I think the Inertia switch is gone, that empty bracket at the top rear of the LH side kick panel is probably where it used to be.

The wiring has been thoroughly molested throughout the car, without being familiar with what it is supposed to look like, i can only guess.

There are taped off wires back by the tail lights with round metal male/female connectors inside the tape one blue/red stripe (or red w/ blue strip) and a black wire on each side., I have no idea what they are supposed to be for. The Horror....

There is a black box tucked up under the left rear fender towards the forward bulkhead that says Speed Transducer on it. I assume this is for the speedometer? Why is it in the trunk?.

I need to make a cheat sheet that has wire color code abbreviations on it so i can better use the wiring diagrams (if I can find the wiring color code legend, again). Having things slightly different on the H&E conversion complicates things.

for an 87 model the inertia switch wire is white/orange, the speedo transducer pickup is at the back of the drive line not the gearbox, blue/red wire is usually associated with lighting, the early 87 efi didn't have idle override relays coloured Blue & black, if you do have those relays then that will narrow down what you have

I think i figured this one out.

After removing the lower pump and seeing both wires broken, I can't see how the pump could run.

The pump wiring seems to be in parallel, so with the battery disconnected, jumper on pump 1, will also send juice to pump 2.

I think when i jumpered the lower tank pump, what i heard was the main fuel pump running.

So no gas going from lower tank to upper tank, which was already empty, so no fuel to motor.

The gas in the lower tank looks like combo of kerosene and diesel fuel (and possibly years old, if the lower pump didn't work), so i will have to get it mostly empty before refilling it after everything is back together.

Not in the UK it isn't. All UK cars (pre-facelifts anyway) have the inertia switch on the UK driver's side (ie RHS) A pillar.
