Default Pondering the possibility

I am looking at moving the fuel pump and filter from the trunk to the underside of the car. I am just waiting to use up most of the fuel I have in the tank (less than 1/4 tank).
In the next week or so I will have a look at the underside to see whether there is a good location to install the fuel pump and filter.
I have to get under the car because the main steel fuel line has a kink and it needs to be replaced or repaired.
In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas regarding this, please let me know. Maybe, it is not even a good idea.
If not, I will inspect the underside and post pics with my ideas.
The whole idea is to clean up the trunk area and get rid of the of the fuel hoses that you have there.
The only hoses that will remain are those that go to the EVAP system.
Any thoughts?

Sounds OK to me. Lots of cars have pumps mounted on the underbody.....usually with some sort of covering or splash shield to protect the pump for the worst of the elements.

Use metal pipe, rather than rubber hose, in any areas that look particularly vulnerable to road hazards and debris

Thanks Doug. I will take a look and figure out a plan of action. You are quite correct on the need for a shield to protect the pump and filter and the use of steel lines rather than rubber.
I will also have to research which external pump will be the best for the application. Any thoughts on that.

Use the pump you have. As long as it covered to protect it from direct/heavy exposure to the elements I think it'll be fine

No idea what you have access to up there, but the 1970's Mercs used the same pump, and it was mounting under the car in a "box" arrangement to protect it and the filter.

BMW similar, same vintage.

I never got around to that move, just the filter into the engine bay, far RH corner, in a custom bracket on the chassis rail. No more fuel spill at filter change.

If you look up inside the cradle itself, I reckon there is plenty of room, and good protection also.

I've contemplated this myself on both the xjs and Xk8. It just seems like it would be a "quick and simple" work around to pulling the tank!

If you do this and leave the sump (swirl) tank in place, you won't gain much as most of the hoses in the trunk will have to stay in place. You could eliminate the fuel filter and pump and that is about it. I don't know where you would put the pump and filter under the car, but I suppose where there is a will, there is a way although it will be hard to locate them so they are not subject to damage from road hazards.
If you do this and eliminate the sump tank, you will experience fuel starvation on corners when the tank level gets low. FYI, the hose that connects to the tank on the lower left, and the hose that goes from the lower right of the tank to the sump tank, are two ends of a fuel cooler. It uses the fuel in the tank to cool return fuel from the engine. If you eliminate these, you may promote vapor lock. I would suggest leaving it as it is.

Here is a pic of what I did to get the engine running. The pump is a spare I had for my Series 3. When I acquired the car, there was no fuel tank and the fuel hoses were cut and just laying in the trunk. Not knowing at the time where things went, I just connected the fuel hoses as best as I could to get the car running.
I am now aware that the fuel pump goes below the battery box next to the sump( swirl) tank. I do not have the mounting bracket for the fuel pump
Since I have to reconfigure the fuel system, I figured I could clean up the trunk area and move the pump and filter to the underside of the car.
The other thing is that my spare Series 3 fuel pump is very noisy( even though I have it mounted on a 1/2 inch thick rubber pad) and I have a kinked steel fuel line which has to be replaced. There is a threaded connection where the fuel line leaves the trunk area and goes under the car. Apparently, the PO tried to undo the connection and twisted the steel line in the process. I am wondering whether that twisted line is causing the pump to be noisy. It was quiet in the Series 3.
I will purchase a new fuel pump for the project since it is always a good idea to have a spare pump.
The other thing is that the plastic outlet for the Jaguar pump is very short and tend to weep fuel sometimes, causing fuel odor in the trunk.
I was told that Airtex makes a replacement fuel pump for Jaguar Series 3 and the XJS that has a 1 inch long brass outlet and a brass inlet capable of taking AN fittings. I am doing some research into this.
Has anyone used one of these pumps on their car? If so, give me some feedback.
