Default The Price of fuel

A reasonably useless comment but what the heck. I filled up my 3.6l XJ-S today. $225.50. Please don’t feel sorry for me I’m only a pensioner.
Mind you we had a lovely ride into the countryside.

Happy New Year Jag mates

Mike

What else am I going to waste my money on!

I had mates pre-pandemic, who thought nothing of Spending £50 on a round of drinks but visibly Blanched at the prospect of my owning a Car that only does around 17 miles per gallon and actually thought I had taken leave of my senses

Even though for the Cost of that round of drinks, we could have a fantastic day out in the Country

Some people just don't have any idea of the fun they are missing!

Note to Paul (ptjs) as I can't get Esso Synergy, I've switched to Shell V Power 99 Ron which seems just as good, so I will be staying with that for the time being 'Only the Best for my Baby' @Greg

Woe, NZ fuel cost is ridiculous. Where I am just south of Pittsburgh, PA USA premium is at just over $4.00 per gallon. That make a 20 gallon fill up at about $ 80.00.
What is truly amazing is that my 2008 dump truck comparables are selling for more than I paid for the truck in 2009 as a new demo. The 2020 Ford Transit Connect we bought new is now selling for $ 6,000.00 more than when we bought it and new 2022s are selling for $ 14,000.00 more. That is just about a 50% increase.

NZ seems still seems cheaper than UK Fuel costs! We're currently putting 5% ethanol here in our XJSs at equivalent of about US$7.77 per US gallon (US$9.32 per UK gallon)!

Here is Canada I'm paying $1.40 CAD per litre for regular (87 AKI ~91 RON) and $1.65 CAD per litre for premium 91 AKI ~95 RON.

That converts to $1.66/$1.96 NZD for our friends down under, or 82 and 97 pence per litre for our UK friends.

The U.S. these past few months had a spike in gas prices and everyone's hair was on fire. It's starting to go down here in the Southwest. We have a "bulk chain" called CostCo that sells Tier 1 gas cheapest, avg $3.69/gal premium. Did the math and found even filling up once a month pays the annual card fee of $60. Just check any of the popular "gas price comparison" apps, i.e. Gas Buddy, Fuel Load, etc. for best deals.

Here in the Netherlands we pay € 2,10 per liter (octane 98), so $9/gal.

Yep - they say the cost of fuel in NZ will hit $3 a liter for 91 by the end of the year.
Over 50% is government tax... to pay for cycle ways that NO one uses, do I sound bitter?

Every time I drive the car I fill it up on the way home, I do not think I could stomach filling it up from empty...

The only way to get out of the situation is to elect leaders that have the citizens wellbeing as their state of mind.

Politicians giveth and taketh. Here in America we have E85 which gives us 114 octane fuel and we only pay $2.65 a gallon. Yes we lose a couple of miles per gallon ( but we are still way ahead) and we have to replace the ECM with something like a Megasquirt to use the sensor that allows us to use E85.

Yeah good Luck with that. I have to gauge where I go, by the money in my pocket about 2/3rds of the time. Sucks

Fuel cost is only one part of the equation. I run a small residential construction company. My fuel costs have doubled over the last year. The cost of vehicles is another thing. I have a 14-year-old dump truck that is now worth more than what I paid for it new. The cost to replace it with an equivalent truck including finance charges would be in the neighborhood of $ 90,000.00. Between just these two expenses my overhead will increase by $ 1,650.00 per month, or more. I am fortunate that I have taken exception care of my truck and I don't anticipate having to buy a new truck but if something should happen that would force a purchase my clients would see the end result. It poses a serious dilemma for small and large businesses alike. The thing is that a little over a year ago I was not in this situation and the solutions are simple. Discretionary driving is a different animal unlike so many situations that cannot just be blown off. I must earn a living. I don't have to take a pleasure drive on the weekend.

If you daily drive your Jaguar V12, well, There are less expensive options.
I like to race my Jaguar and for the few gallons I use it’s not a massive portion of ownership. If you like to polish your car for car shows etc. again it’s not a major cost of ownership.
Collectors typically have so many choices that once again it’s relatively trivial.
For those restoring the Jaguar? Well, they can only wait until they can buy fuel.

I know it sucks, but if you’re driving an XJS, everyone already feels sorry for you. Owning a Bri ‘ ish car is akin to masochism. You cant ever feel the pain.

No 1 if the first question you ask about a car like an XJS is "what is the MPG" - you can't afford it because fuel is the tip of the iceberg - same goes for my XF (well over 1k just for tyres) - these aren't cars for a budget conscious type, they need, they get, simple - and if they don't get they will bite your wallet hard sooner or later.

Now that said the cost of fuel her in the UK is eye watering at the moment, especially when you only get 240 miles or less on a tank, I used to call them smiles per gallon but they really aren't any more. With congestion charging, so called smart motorways, more roadworks than open road, miles of virtually stationary traffic and cameras on every street corner the fun is gone, I no longer have any interest at all in driving and actually find I try to avoid it. Perhaps that's the global plan - conspiracy - nah - the digital era means that you can't drop your guard even for a second, just one second over a speed limit here can see your cost of motoring increase by a factor of 10 when you get points on your license.

I'm seriously considering selling a lot of my collection. I get more pleasure from fixing than I do driving these days.
