Default Question for UK Drivers Re: UK Lockdown

Hi Guys

Does anyone know or is able to find out, if we are still able to go for a Non Essential Drive pleasure drive in our Cars

Could we for instance have a pleasure drive from point 'A' to point 'B' providing that we did not interact with anyone or even get out of our Car at our chosen destination

Hi OB,

I think this treads the line between a legal constraint and a moral constraint. (And one I'm struggling with myself).

My interpretation of the govt. guidance is that you shouldn't be out unless for essential work, getting essentials such as food or medicine, or going for one physical exercise per day.

And I guess, despite the fact that you don't intend to get out of the car, you may break down requiring attendance of the AA etc, or you may have an accident requiring emergency attendance etc etc. So you still risk contact with other people.

Why not do as I do, in this nice weather - Take the XJS for a drive in order to do your shopping, or to go to a place to then go for a walk?

Stay safe, safe healthy.

Paul

Hi Paul

I don't think going for a drive is breaking any moral guide lines as I would be fully intending not to interact with anyone
As far as breaking down is concerned

The same thing could happen if you go out for a run and collapse with exhaustion where you would still need help, so being out in the Car is far less risky

I am not looking to flout any rules but you have 100% more chance of either giving or catching Corona in a Supermarket Shopping than staying Isolated in your Car

Hi OB,

I wouldn't disagree that the inside of your car is safe, but I sense the issue is being taken completely out of our hands anyway. Today, three of my friends (in different parts of the country) got questioned by police officers as to where they were going. Another colleague of mine said that his relative (army personnel) has had the whole of their barracks mobilised ready for enforcement support.

Stay safe everyone

Paul

If you go for a drive and have a crash you will be taking valuable services - Police, Ambulance, Fire, NHS - away from what they should be concentrating on which is not your sorry ****.
Do as you are told, stay at home and ride it out.
Or not; your choice.

Hi Paul

I heard that as well, so I guess I'll just have to wait and ride it out

But Yesterday I was Seconds away from renewing my Car insurance £550! but then I had second thoughts and decided to wait and a good job I did!

As last night things went pear shaped as we all know

Couldn't you just be going shopping in the next county?
"Yes, officer, but you see, the particular brand of toilet tissue I require is only sold in Inverness."
Besides, if walking your dog is allowed, then surely taking your cat out is okay?

Road travel in the UK is essential use only. Fortunately my jaguar is my daily and my job as an undertaker means i won't be asked to work from home anytime soon.

Hi Someday

Although I'm a self confessed 'Bargain Hunter' I'm also very honest and know if I pull any stunts like that 'Karma' will catch up with me, as it has done with others who have tried to bowl me over in the past

So under the circumstances as Tempting as it is, I won't be looking for loopholes to try and buck the System, not unless the System tries to buck me first, as I genuinely have a massive amount of sympathy for anyone who is caught up in this situation

Which has already started to work in my favour, as I've found an Insurance Company that has cut £100 off what I have been paying to Insure my Merc and now with so much time on my hands, i'm converting one of the Jags back to Brake Servo non ABS

Then maybe with a bit of luck they might relax the rule on 'Pleasure Driving' as this is a question that seems to be often cropping up and as we all know the XJS is one of those most reliable Cars that seldom if ever breaks down!

The driving ban still doesn't make sense to me, though. I mean, is driving really such a risk? In the very unlikely event you get into an accident, it seems extreme. I'd say it's important for mental health. Don't most accidents happen in the home, after all? Apparently, in NZ you can't even get a WOF (MOT) during their lockdown. Insane.
I'm just glad I don't live anywhere where the world is going crazy. I renewed my licence today, and the classroom (they make everyone sit through a lecture and videos) had us spaced out in alternate desks, with the windows opened a bit and the air circulation cranked up, but that was all. Coming back, it was such a lovely day that I was very tempted to go for a cruise, but I'm on lockdown because of deadlines, not viruses.

OB
What happened last night? is all driving banned?
Also, using the car to do the shopping as peter recommended is what would be OK. That is what I shall be doing here.

Great use of time on the non-ABS. You will never regret it.

Hi Greg

Best to have a look at one of the News feeds like Yahoo, as there are lots of very similar questions but not as many definitive answers as you or I would ever like to see

Hi Someday

While I agree with what you're saying, I don't make the rules but try and stay out of the Town as much as I possibly can, which in someways is a good thing as I can do all those jobs on the Jag that have been on the back burner far too long

This one post has changed my mind about the Posse Comitatus Act. For those not familiar, it's a US law dating from shortly after our Civil War that forbids the military from participating in law enforcement functions, with certain exceptions.

I watched one of Sargon of Akkad's videos earlier today where he mentioned someone being cited (or detained or something) for "being out for a drive out of boredom". Looks like you need a destination if you want to go for a drive in the UK these days.

Hi Robert

We are limited to essential journeys only, like Medical/Exercise and Essential Shopping, which does not include any pleasure driving
