rack rebuilt now hard to turn and squeeking
Had a garage, rebuild my rack n pinion. reinstalled rack, drives fine yet if i have to get out of a tight spot in drive or reverse i can't turn the wheel all the way and starts squeeling. power steering pump fine and fluid..the shop will fix my issue but figured id get some input on what may be causing this...thanks for any help.... Might help to put the car info in your sig area, via the CP section at the top of the page.
I forget what you got due to age.
That sounds like they have not got the seals correct.
ALSO, have a looky at the metal pipe that runs between the sections of the rack, if it is NOT seated correctly in each end section, that will be the result. It is an easy thing to catch and bugger up when installing the rack.
#9 in this parts drawing.
Another thought, and it is NOT shown in that drawing. I will look for a drawing of it when time permits.
There is a grease fitting in the end of an adjusting bolt/locknut arrangement, on the side of the rack, adjacent to where the pinion head goes in. This is a wear pad adjuster, and is sping loaded, with a very heavy spring. Maybe that adjustment is wound IN too far, and the plastic wear pad is applying too much pressure to the rack rod, it does happen. OR, they forgot to grease that section after assembly, seen plenty of that over the years.
