Rattle - gearbox or clutch?

Hi all,
Have an issue with my 1990, XJS 3.6 manual which has done 139,000 miles on (I believe) original clutch and gearbox.
Car drives fine although clutch biting point is low. After car has warmed up and clutch pedal is pushed hard to the floor, I get a rattle / chatter from gearbox / clutch area and a slight vibration. Noise level not constant i.e., it comes and goes. Makes no difference if gearbox is in neutral or any gear. No noise with clutch pedal released.
Trying to decide if this is a clutch issue (release bearing?) or something internal inside gearbox before planning remedial work.
Thoughts appreciated and thanks for reading.
Cheers,
LeeP
