Unhappy Rear axel case seal

Just had all the fluids changed and shop said the left side rear axel where it enters the rear housing is wet. Probably has a leak. Question how does this outer seal get replaced? Do we need to drop the whole aft section or is it an external seal that can be replaced over the axel? 1995 XJS 4.0 auto.
Thanks

1995 so outboard brakes. Drive shaft needs to be separated at inner universal joint. Output shaft can then be removed after undoing the 5 bolts retaining the housing.
The output shaft assembly needs to be disassembled in order to replace the seal in the bearing housing.
Not a particularly difficult job.
