rear "muffler" replacement

rear "muffler" replacement
Time for the rear "mufflers" (if that's what they are) to be replaced. The rust and corrosion of 25 years has caught up with them.
What I'm taking about here are the "straight through" mufflers that are at the rear of the car, and which attach to the stainless steel tailpipes.
I can get replacements, including the welded-on mounting bracket, for $145 each. I'l prefer not to pay that much.
So my question is, are these actually termed "mufflers" or "resonators" or something else? Anything in particular I should look for?
In looking for replacements, do I need to be concerned with more than just fit?
I really would like the car to be as quite as possible, so sticking just anything in to fill the gap and save money isn't what I'd like.
Oh, I can say that with the rest of the exhaust system stock, the sound at idle is VERY annoying without the rear mufflers in place. Even extending the pipe back beyond the rear of the car doesn't help much.
Thanks,
John

I replaced my 'silencers'with 8" long Cheery bombs. You would not like them if you want a completely quiet XJS. I wanted a little bass tone and the 'bombs' serve well. I used the original tips so the car looks original.
The rears are called silencers in Jag literature. They do that well, too.
Cheers, RagJag.

rear mufflers
John,
I'm in Charleston WV and took the two rear mufflers off of a parts car I had for a while.
they look to be in reasonable condition and have the mounting bracket. Come and get them or how does 100 bucks plus shipping sound. If they don't work, you can have your money back less shipping....

Exhaust system replacement
Folks: I know nothing about replacing all or parts of the exhaust system on the XJS (mine is 1992 facelift, 6 cylinder, coupe). Is there a consensus as to the best types of replacements if I go for stainless steel (quallity)?
If I am replacing say, half of the system, should I simply go for the whole thing starting after the catalytic converters (assuming they are OK).
What alternatives are there? And are there some that cause problems?
Sorry if this is too vague or open a question.
