rear seat conversion 95 XJS Convertible
Hello, we recently bought a 95 XJS Convertible with the back seat already removed, and the tops of the seat belt towers cut off.
The prior owner was in the process of converting the rear seat area into a simple package tray, and we are now forced to pick up where they left off.
So, since we cannot put a seat back there due to the shoulder belt towers being cut off and the lap belt removed, I am in the process of designing a simple package tray for the rear area. I plan on making it out of simple 3/8" cabinet grade plywood and upholstering it with matching tan carpet. Perhaps I will install a simple metal rail in the front of the rear lower area to prevent a gym bag or briefcase from sliding over into the foot wells.
Many of the XJS's I've seen on ebay and other sites already have the rear seats removed. Some of the package trays have elevated floors and locking flip up lids. That would be interesting, but time-consuming.
Since we really cannot go back to having a rear seat, what is the most practical option we have? Thanks.

In the long run, I think the rear seats are kind of worthless, so I think trying to re-weld the tops of the shoulder belt harnesses would be a waste of time.
I think we will simply fabricate a solution from plywood and carpet.
Has anyone here done this or posted step-by-step photos of the procedure? Thanks.

Here is one thread on the subject, they may well be others if you do a search.

If it had been available when I bought my car, I would definitely have opted for the luggage locker. The rears seats are useless for people. In 19 years I have only ever had 2 people in the back seat, it was comical (and painful) to say the least
Cheers,
Allan
