what is the recommended oil for the steering pump
(1988 5.3l xjs)?

It's easiest to just use the same fluid you stick in the trans, less stuff to keep in stock, also a little easier to spot on the ground for leaks.

I have Jaguar XJ6 1990 Sovereign vin# 595137 I use at the moment the green mineral oil but has leak problems (3 racks were replaced) is it better just to replaced the oil to the red one?

I've used ATF in most of my critters, including my 83 XJ wuzza 6.
No issues at all

Best to ask in the "XJ40" section.

Those/your car has a hydro-assist system for the steering, brakes, and suspension that is quite different than an ordinary pump system. I think the green hydraulic fluid is quite specific to that application and shouldn't be sunstituted

Just to be clear, power steering fluid and automatic transmission fluid are two different things.

Over the years many power steering systems have used automatic transmission fluid. However, you'd never want to use power steering fluid in your transmission
