Default Relay with diode

If you're looking for a relay with an internal diode, such as the "Feedback Inhibit Relay" AGU1097, you can get a good replacement for just $4.80 from Summit Racing

Hella part number 933791091

The diode 'points' towards terminal 86 and the relay has the double 87 output posts

The original relay is actually a Bosch 0 332 014 411

I think Jaguar used this type of relay in various locations/purposes over the years....but I know it was used as mentioned above on some late 80s V12s. It is NLA under the AGU1097 number

Cheers

Thanks for this. This relay has the diode ACROSS the relay coil terminals. As you say, it is correct for the inhibit.

In contrast, the main power relay in the trunk/ boot (red socket) has a diode in SERIES with the coil. Unfortunately, Jaguar used a variety of different Bosch relays that all fit each others sockets, but are incorrect/won't work if they are mixed up. Some have diodes, some have resistors, some are just straight relays. Even the blue diode pack on the left side of the engine bay in my '85 uses the same connector.
None of the square relays are sealed on my '85. I'm changing them out for sealed units as I find them. Several of my unsealed ones show signs of corrosion inside.

Exactly!

On the 80s cars, at least, Jaguar alerted us to the oddball relays by giving them a stripe of paint.

Another subtle relay tidbit is that Jaguar often used relays with the 30-85-86-87-87 terminal configuration. This is much less common than the 30-85-86-87-87A type. The two function quite differently and, if you don't catch the difference, can cause some head scratching

The main power relay on my car is so ugly, that if I hadn't known to look for the red stripe, I never would have noticed it. Replacement on the way.

Porsche did the same thing with round Bosch relays in the 70s. Several different types, and unsealed metal covers.

New cars have different connectors for virtually everything to Murphyproof on the production Iine. I guess manufacturers learned!

Oops, time to get back on topic!

If all else fails you can just use a regular relay and then a diode called a flyback. Use a 1N4007 and put the cathode (the stripe) to the positive. This diode suppresses the spike cased by the relay coil when its switched off.
