Replacing hoses 1996 XJS AJ16
Good afternoon,
Any tips on changing the hoses on a 1996 XJS; particularly the one running from behind the water pump that runs under the intake manifold? I've seen one post where the fellow just removed the intake and I'd rather not do that but it looks like a bear to change otherwise. Would like to hear from someone who has replaced that hose. Any other tips regarding changing the hoses and flushing the system would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mitch

Manifold off?
It is downright easy once the manifold is off! While you're at it, replace whatever else suits you. Namely, the two coolant pipe gaskets!! {EDIT: Part# EAC9745} ... Easy. I also put in a starter and repaired a section of heater take-off hose. You might do the lower hose or the oil sender gasket too. I think the most difficult part was removing the wiper mechanism to get clearance. No need to disconnect the harness to the coils or injectors, leave all that connected to the intake manifold and runner. You'll get a new intake manifold gasket installed then. A good cleaning might be in order down there too!
The Dayco part # for the bypass hose is 71666. Also called the DEVIL hose.
There is information in the X300 section about doing this job without manifold removal. Access is a real devil.

I found no need to remove the manifold, but I did remove the air cleaner, airflow sensor, and some sort of plastic pump looking thing above the alternator to get at the back of the water pump.
I’ve done this twice now... once when the hose burst, and then more recently when the water pump started leaking (190000 miles!). The second time was made much easier to remove because the first time I’d used radiator hose grease on all connections. AutoZone sells it in little packets labeled as radiator hose grease, or you can get a tube of it but it’s labeled AGS Sil-Glyde Brake Lubricant. Same stuff though, just a rubber safe silicon grease. Keeps the hoses from getting stuck on. Also makes them simpler to push on.

I looked that part up, and it doesn't appear to be used on the AJ16 engines, just the 5.3 and 6.0 v12 engines...but your pictures look like you have the 6 cylinder....are you sure you gave us the right part number?
Thanks.
Thanks.
