  2. Remove bolt securing dipstick upper tube, then remove upper tube.Where is it? Top or bottom access? Answered. 7/16 access by feel from top Done.
  3. Position fender supports to allow installation of engine support tool, then attach engine support tool No. MS53B or equivalent, to engine lift brackets. Tighten tool hook to support engine weight.using jack/wood underneath

  11. Disconnect kickdown switch electrical connector and remove bolt securing switch wiring clip from transmission.
  12. Disconnect modulator vacuum line, then remove clamp securing modulator and the modulator. Some fluid will drain from modulator housing when modulator is removed.
  13. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission, then remove bolt securing oil line clamp to engine sump. got the bottom undone. Trying to get the wrench on the top one is kinda tricky. The the way it was finished tightening down i guess

  15. Remove right side steering rack bellows heat shield, then remove right side catalyst from exhaust manifold, if equipped. Why? Anyone? Buller? Buller?
  16. Remove engine to transmission attaching bolts except two lower left side bolts and lower starter attaching bolt.
  17. Remove lower dipstick tube. Attach transmission jack to transmission and remove remaining engine to transmission bolts. Lower transmission and remove from below vehicle. Use caution not to damage right side catalytic converter when removing transmission.
  18. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
where I'm at so far. Just puttering. Comments in red.

How is the lower dipstick attached to the transmission? Does it just pull out? I felt and didn't seem like there was a nut securing it? I want to remove it now because its in my way to access the top cooler line.

New tools

11.99 on sale for the extension set.

9.99 for the 3/8 joint lol.

The cooler fittings are a pain. If you remove the lower one out of the way, you can get better purchase on the upper one.
Have you got your 12 pint (double hex) 7/16ths socket for the top starter bolt yet?

And i just read the tranny dip stick just pulls out with some muscle. Gonna go see if i can wiggle it out.

It is just a push-fit with an O ring, BUT the pipe, which is in two parts telescope together, is held into the box by that bracket I told you about. So pulling it up and out is impossible without bending the pipe unless the bracket is undone.

The top part i got out today. Got to use one of my new extensions 🤗 . I had to get the socket on it first then the extension. Used a magnet to grab it as i pulled it out.

Took out that 12 point. Also got the filler pipe to move a bit to let me get a wrench in the top one. I couldnt get it to break free so I'm letting it soak overnight and ill try again tomorrow.

Good news is my rebuild kit already shipped!

Might drop the trans this weekend

Rescue,
I love this thread; amazing detail. I have my rear cage out, largely cleaned up, and am replacing parts. I noticed you left off the U joint covers in the pics I saw. Are you leaving them off permanently? Does anyone think that's an issue at all? Mine are trashed, and look like crap. Would love to leave them off.

THX!!

They are just dust covers. And not very good since the one side is open so to me stones etc could get jammed in there. Plus they access hole plugs were half missing. They are off and will remain off.

The purpose of the covers is to protect against road debris and water splashes. Considering most U-joints don’t have those I leave them off the race car.

  14. Remove torque converter access cover. Remove bolts attaching converter to driveplate.
  15. Remove right side steering rack bellows heat shield, then remove right side catalyst from exhaust manifold, if equipped. I don't think i need to do this so I will not. Theres nothing in my way. This list may be from a different version.
  16. Remove engine to transmission attaching bolts except two lower left side bolts and lower starter attaching bolt.
  17. Remove lower dipstick tube. Ive tried but its getting hung up on the bracket.near the top of the ball housing. But its love and has give so should be ok.Attach transmission jack to transmission and remove remaining engine to transmission bolts. Lower transmission and remove from below vehicle. Use caution not to damage right side catalytic converter when removing transmission

So all that is left is the torque converter bolts...3? And then the bell housing bolts (ive counted 7 including the 12 point starter bolt but ive read there 8 or 6 of them. I'm gonna look but I can't seem to see any more. )

Thats is all for today

It IS a great thread, ain't it tho! Can't wait for the trans work. Is in my future no matter what,,, am thinking about the T700

About the covers. They will/can end up rubbing on things, come undone or partially, flop around. And they are quite old at this point. I was told by a resident GURU here, that it is FINE to leave them off. I chucked mine. Happily.
