Made a start on the job today, pulled the IRS out and gave it a quick once over with the pressure washer. It took longer to clean the drive afterwards than it did to get 34 years of gunge off the IRS.

I cannot stand any more of this! First we have the perfect bloody shed. Then we have the perfect wonderful driveway which my farm track cannot begin to rival, then, by Godfrey, we have a snap of the rear axle just out of the car, which already looks a sight better than mine did when I had finished rebuilding it!
I shall complain to the moderator about cruel and unfair posts!

Clarke,

That is CRUEL, and Greg is upset, not good at his age.

Might be worth blocking the hub outer pivot grease bleed hole fiasco wilst its apart, as doing it once its back together is not on.

Have a read, I wrote it years ago, and if its not making sense let me know and I will fix.

Oops, We planned the 11m long bay with high door to park a caravan. Just happens to be that an XJS found it's way into the space. Well, that caravan arrived today with to place to park. My bad.
It will get in when the rear end is done.

Look, I know you told Madame that, but there is no need to tell us fairy stories!

You do what ya gotta do to get things over the line like a ridiculously large shed.
I'm still thinking it will just fit in the car port down the back, will be a tight fit but only the draw bar will be exposed to weather. (not that I have done the measurements)

I have been told by the powers above I will be living in the shed if I don't behave. Punishment, lol.

Nice Caravan, you can live in the shed... short walk to the beer fridge.
You made removing the cage look like a walk in the park!
The engine lift is perfect for the job!
Keep the pictures coming!

First thing was to get the parts washer assembled. A $20 bath tub and $30 worth of fittings and a 1000 ltr tank from work. Cheap plumbing for the shed. Great to be able to wash hands before going in the house.

I removed the hubs and drive shafts, the first side took 15 minutes with a spanner. The other side wouldn't budge with a rattle gun, had to resort to a 600mm breaker bar with two pipe extentions for leverage. Two hours and a few bruised fingers later all done. Shed cleaned up and ready to start the next step, hand brake and calipers off.

This job is whole a lot easier with the right tools, working environment and the knowledge of having done it before going in blind. Little things like knowing about the holes in the rotors for taking the calipers off.

Hand brake pads look like they are in pretty good shape, but I'll put the new ones in since they are sitting on the bench.

It seems to me that one side of this IRS has been worked on and the other is original, same as yesterday one side came apart with spanners, the other took brut force, time and beer. Bolts for the calipers were still in with loctite.

I had to remove one caliper still on the rotor, the pads were stuck on it and no amount of FBH hits or prying was going to change that. Mission complete. Turns out the pistons were stuck and the rotor was so worn I couldn't get the pads over the lip on the rotor. Yet the other rotor has been replaced at some point as it has hardly any wear showing.

Why would you rebuild one side and not the other?

Rebuild BOTH sides! If not it will eat away at you until you have to go through the whole process again to still the demons!

Greg, it has always been the plan to rebuild both sides. The thought of doing one side never crossed my mind.
I just don't understand why who ever had this IRS out last would have only done the left side.

Great work - I am enjoying watching the progress.
The engine hoist certainly is a good idea!

Why do people buy a 30 year old car and fail to go through it replacing all the worn out parts, and then grumble the car is not reliable? Why did a garage replace my mate's driving seat and secure it with 5mm bolts? why did someone think this was a suitable gearbox mount fix, see pic?
Basically, people are just barmy.
