Rubber Side Stripes Position and Attachment?

Rubber Side Stripes Position and Attachment?
It seems to be a mystery. Some XJS have chrome-lined rubber stripes on the sides while others don't. How are they attached? Are there holes for clips in the body underneath? Or are they attached with adhesive like 3M tape? Can they be removed or relocated?
I am looking at two practically identical 1976 Jaguar XJ-S and they have the rubber stripes in different positions. If someone accidentally moved them after paint, they would not fit since the two examples show different strip lengths. My 1986 XJ-SC has them in the higher position. The 1995 XJS Convertible pictured has them in the lower position.
Is there any logic or pattern to it?

Almost all of those are aftermarket/dealer installed....as on the silver car and black car. Rivet-on aluminum channels with slide-in vinyl inserts. Very popular in the 70s-80s.
The moldings on the green car look like they might be the "Genuine Jaguar Accessory" type....hard to tell. Those are self-adhesive as far as I know.
Cheers
