Shift lever thread?

Shift lever thread?
So I was cleaning up the interior of the xjs last night, and came across something that seemed odd to me.
I have the leather wrapped "knob" type shifter, not the "tee" type, and it's looking pretty rough - dirty, dried out, scuffed. I have a wood replacement that was either made by or for the previous owner - tried it but didn't like it - way bigger than the original, some rough edges, and the emblem didn't line up straight.
Next idea, maybe I'll try to make one? So I measured the threads on the lever - several times - and what I came up with was 5/16 - 20. That's not a standard thread in any system I'm familiar with. I'm going to check it again to be sure I wasn't too tired or extra stupid or distracted last night, but I'm pretty sure, also no bolt I had fit the knobs.
That leaves the question, two questions really - is that the right size? And if so, why would they do that?
Thanks, Eric
