Right. I am 99% sure I've seen this type of side strip in a Jaguar accessories catalog.
Elsewhere in other Jaguar accessory brochures I've seen some color-coded (and thinner) side strips....but in reality I've seen them installed only on a few Canadian cars, as I recall.
It might be worth noting that (as far as I know) Jaguar USA, Jaguar Canada (and almost surely others) had their own "Genuine Jaguar Accessories" schemes. Such items were Jaguar sanctioned, and had Jaguar part numbers....but were not always something you'd see in a regular Jaguar parts catalog.
There are many aftermarket types of side strips ...not having any connection to Jaguar at all.....that were popular with dealers back in they day. In the USA these side mouldings were 'all the rage' for many years. Some looked Ok, others hideous. The worst (and sadly most common) are the type that used riveted-on aluminum channels into which colored vinyl strips were inserted. Removing these mean filling holes and repainting! Gah!
Cheers

Thanks for that link, my Canadian XJ12 has the horrible rivet on type that Doug mentions. From that website it looks like this one, and some new vinyl is due since it has shrunk in some strips
Body Side Molding, Truck Molding, Car Molding, Vinyl Trim
I dare not take it off and have to deal with body work, i took the chrome wheel arches off and found rust bubbles lurking underneath

If you cannot find the XJ-S version of the rubber side mouldings, they are very similar to the ones Jaguar made for the XJ40. These look to be identical, but presumably are longer. They're readily available in the UK at least - and could be cut down to the correct size. The XJ40 side strips were certainly available in the USA.
Mouldings and Finishers-Vdp/Majestic - Parts For XJ6 (2.9, 3.2, 3.6, 4.0) from (V)500001 to (V)667828 | Jaguar Heritage Parts UK
This is what they looked like when they were on my car:
Do you still have the original side strips?
If you do, they are quite easy to refurbish. I am refurbing mine at the moment! I took them off some years ago since the chrome part went milky.
The chrome part is a chrome tape. If you remove that, then carefully sand the grey substrate with fine sandpaper, you can put the same kind of tape back on and they do genuinely look like new. Quite a few people have done this with XJ40s in the UK - it does last and survives the elements!
