Default Spot what's wrong in this picture

1992 XJS 5.3.
Great view of the inboard brakes.

How would you react if you discovered this?

Those nuts are difficult to get on, you need a thin walled socket. I'd be a bit concerned and doing any canyon carving, that's for sure.

Agreed. Trying to replace it ASAP.
Could this mean it was not torqued up enough and slipped off - or even worse, not re-fitted at all?

Remove those daft UJ covers, then the nut can be far more easily fitted. You should use metlocs, which are one-time use nuts, available from the Jaguar specialist suppliers

I think that somehow its come off or not been replaced after being there for some time. A quick glance at those threads and it seems that the outer threads have become oil and grease contaminated, whereas the inner threads have become rusted implying that the nut was once there.

I second the suggestion to dump the dust shields!

Good luck

Paul

Cheers Paul. Yes it was on there last year, the guy whose job it was to replace it seems to have omitted it.

Do you know where I can get the metlock nuts in the UK, and what size they are?
Cheers.

Try googling "Aerotight Nuts"

Companies such as RS Components or Westfield Fasteners are pretty good.

Cheers

All the nuts are in place and tight now
Yes there have been other surprises including a differential rebuild. Also done!
