Strange steering experience
#21
My 86 has too much power assist. I get little feel thru steering wheel. Drives me nuts. The car does corner like it's on rails.
I think tire load rating, tire compound and tire inflation would make a huge difference in handling. I would expect that made the change in handling. Maybe I need lower load rating to get better feel.

BC, if the time ever comes that you need to replace the rack, the later ZF rack as fitted to facelift cars, has much more feel and less assistance than the earlier racks such as your car had from the factory. Goes straight in except that the tie rod ends are metric so you need to change them too, and the pipes may be different.

I would think:
1. The rack responds to driver input as assisted by hydraulic boost. Boost can be changed. At the pressure relief valve. spring tension, oriifice size, etc. On your pump, I can't say. Never saw one.
2. Wheel alignment and tire pressure. Differing driver input needed.
Example, more caster, more directional stability. but, more input needed.
Go out to your car and others. Look at the tire position at full lock!!
