I've been re-assembling the suspension and on disassembly of the left side upright prior to paint and rebuild I have found what my senses tell me is a dead upright. The wear on the seal surface is really bad, I'm 99% sure this is toast (other side is perfectly flat) ....
Does the team concur that it is deceased before I waste time and paint on it .... the groove is at least .5mm deep but I've not wasted any time to verify -
It might still be usable. That is, the seal is fairly elastic (so to speak) and might still hold the grease at bay. But since it's already off the car and you're apparently willing to replace it......
Agreed - just needed some moral backup for the man math, seems like there's a new 'spend' at every turn. I actually have the original 'rope' versions of the seals - new old stock - so I don't know that they're quite so elastic - guessing this is the result of dirt getting in there, based on the mess I cleaned off it has been letting grease out for a while, other side is unmarked.
Two very clean and unworn ones purchased, they have been powder coated but will need some fettling on the mounts and I may polish the surface where the seal runs a little, might as well replace both 'for symmetry' even though it means tearing down the right side again. I've also purchased new water deflectors, already have new stub axles, bearings, bump stops, bushes, pivot bolts, ball joints and springs yes I know the risks, I got high end Eibach's and have a number of spacers to play with ride hieght though the free legth is near identical to what came off. There's not much of the original front suspension left now - even the subframe has been replaced. I put a gratuitous pic of my refurbed calipers below too.
I refurbed these back in Aug 2021 - completely stripped and painted, re-assembled with stainless pistons - complete kit of parts from Big Red - and the use of the oven while the wife was away to cook / cure the paint.
Just Another Grand - I like that - going to put that in my Lexicon along side Break My Wallet and Found On Road Dead
I truly don't know what drives the insanity - defies any attempt to rationalise it or apply common sense - should really get rid of my SV8 but can't find the will to do it.
I fitted Eibachs on the front of my 4.0 convertible some years ago and ride height was spot-on.
I jnow what you mean about the SV8. I should really sell my supercharged Range Rover with the Jaguar 4.2 engine. But its not worth much and then every now and again I drive it and the supercharger spools up! And I think maybe I should keep it!
