Is There Any Justifiable Reason For Owning More Than One XJS?
Why would anyone in their right mind, ever think of wanting to own more than One XJS.
Is it just greed or stupidity, or in my case nothing less than a Total Obsession with this particular Marque.
I don't really have a good excuse, as its Two or more lots of Tax and Insurance and Two or more MOT's.
Yet theoretically I can only drive one Car at once.
They are sort of moreish like potato Crisps, once you've tasted one you want another!
But then you've always got a spare Car, in case one of the others decides to break down.
That's my excuse, whats yours?

if we look at it realisticly NOPE no reason to have two XJS , there is always something stupid going on with one or the other, rarely are both up to perfect condition!
and we buy them because they are CHEAP to buy, if they were in the $30,000/$50,000. price range , few would own two or more XJS!
and for a spare car i have a simple dependable Japanese sedan , 150K miles and never a serious problem, usual maintenence, and low cost at that!

Hell yes, there's a justifiable reason. Life is too short to drive anything but 12 cylinders, and it's always good to have a backup vehicle.
I'm down to 1 XJS again at the moment, but will snag a few more while they are still cheap. I think 2 is sufficient for me to keep, and I want to experience a few other exotics as well. That Ferrari 612 is depreciating nicely, and I've seen a couple of 456 for tantalizingly cheap as well. Houston is a great place to find cars.

All I can say in defense of my 1995 XJS convertible hoarding is that there are many an E-type owner wishing they had bought the E's back when they were at the low point and put a few away in an extra garage.
What is interesting about the XJS is how few convertibles were built in it's 21 year production run and then how few facelift ones were built added to how short the run was for the AJ16 and the 6.0L.
Good thing I was paying attention to my economics class when we went over supply and demand-LOL!!!!

When an XJS goes wrong, even something minor they can take a fair while to sort out, especially for a motorist who may be used to driving a more normal sort of Car.
Where you either Fix it yourself or be prepared to pay out for some Astronomical Garage or Shop Bills.
It certainly wouldn't take many of those to exceed the cost of a second XJS.

diam is correct, because they are cheap and easy , lot of people will treat them badly, let them soak in the salt air, poor maintenence, ruin the engines and tranmissions,ETC.
those types will have little respect for any car that dont cost a fortune!
i suppose in time(like what happened to E-types) prices will rise, i myself had a 1967 E, when the engine started knocking on front cylinder,I just junked it to the scrape yard!
i only paid $750. for it in 1970, and so it was not considered valuable, i lived in a city where you could not leave a nonrunning, unregistered vehicle outside, unsightly !ordinence!
and we all see today times do change!
HEY guys my 1st car(1934 Ford roadster) cost me $18.-20. US dollars, 1949.
i delivered newspapers with a bicycle! YUP times do change, before i turned 21yrs, i had so many cars that today ,i'm betting worth $1,000,000. and thats no BS!
different era, different values, people still remembered the GREAT DEPRESSION, nothing was valued ,only survival.
the war was over, and ordinary people still had nothing, NO WAR ,NO MONEY.

And one day I'll be wishing I had kept them but (120 cylinders) was maybe a bit too much.

Even a really rough one would be mega bucks in the UK but you are right times change.
If only we knew then what we know now.

I have two now and plan to add at least one more. Why?
My black '90 is my daily driver.
My '89 will receive a more extensive restoration and will be more of a show car (but still driven).
The third XJS will be built as a pure show car with body mods, custom paint and a complete drive train change. I'm going to convert it to full electric. I'm currently looking for a nice '89-91 convertible that has a bad or missing engine to begin the project.
If I buy any others it will be for parts or for trading up.

You could consider yourself a XJS "conservationist" if you have 1 of each type.
Some would say you would be a hoarder if you have more than 2 of the same type.
I am seriously looking at a late 1994 XJS 2+2 here in Atlanta that is listed at $5500.00.
The pictures look really good. White, AJ16, nice trimmed out upholstery, 75K miles.
That would make me a semi-Conservationist?
Two 1994's (one early 1994 and one late 1994) and one 1999 XJ8 VDP.
But, the current XJS is really my wife's car.
I just get to keep it running and make it look pretty.
I was looking to get one to call my own. . . maybe one day.

An electric XJS will be unbelievable but your Black one still does it for me!

I bow to your greater knowledge of the subject!
As for me, any talk of getting another XJS would be immediately vetoed by the management, followed by a visit to the Doctor with a view to having me certified.
