I've checked the Jaguar parts catalogue but it doesn't mention rubber bung anywhere; must be a bit they borrowed from Aston Martin.
CPS fits just below the little shelf thing below part 17 which I guess is the front crank seal (which is not visibly leaking).
So, if the CPS on the 3.6 has a gasket, would the whole little thing have been carried over from the V12?
Just noticed; 19 is no where near the crank, are we talking about the same thing?
XJR-s has a re-valved steering rack, tricky to find anyone that knows anything about them.
Thinking of adding dry porridge and treacle, steers like a super tanker at slow speeds anyway!

The OEM gaskets are cork and not much good. The above gasket is top notch stuff, a thin metal core with neoprene each side. get a tube of high temp gasket dressing;

Smear
a VERY THIN coat each side of the gasket and nip it up not too tight. Job done. Grant makes 100% RTV gaskets, which are also 100% leakproof. If you ask him, or do a search, you will find his advice.
Greg
thanks for the info Greg. Can you explain what to look for / need to know regarding the collision bracket you mention? Ie what will the mechanic need to be aware of?

So, anyway, does the CPS sensor have a gasket on it or not?
None of the pictures I can find show one but if it goes in to the engine then surely there should be one?

yes it does Steve. My diagram (my last post above) was from the JCP site. It is called a "chain adjuster plug", no 19

Steve, anyone can make a gasket out of gasket paper. This is a job your local guy could easily do.

Leaks from the bung go straight down are easily mistaken, all you have to do is look at it and see if it is wet with oil under it, and if the plastic bung has gone hard.

Any decent rack rebuilder will rebuild that rack and fit new seals no bother. The valving will not be touched or affected. Basically it will be naff-all different from the later ZF rack anyway, so in extremis fit one of those, Grublogger has them.

From memory I would say no gasket on cps. Others may no better. From experience be very very careful removing the old timing chain adjuster plug. I was forewarned by others on here . The plug goes into a hard lump due to heat and there is the possibility of it dropping back into the chain aperture . I have just done mine and looking at it all seemed well. Upon removal I was shocked at the condition of the rubber. Really glad I changed it and thanks to Greg and grant once more for some top advice. Hope this helps.

If a lump of plug drops inside, it does not really matter. It cannot get into the oiling system as there is a gauze over the sump inlet. When I redid my engine and renewed the O rings in the oil pickup tubes fixings, I found the remains of mine in the sump.

So, left it sat in the garage for 3 weeks, happily dribbling away to itself like an elderly relative in a home....
Started immediately, backed it out of the garage, perched it on the pavement (sidewalk), left it running and peered underneath the back end.
Unfortunately nobody jumped in the driver's seat and stole it but luckily my enormous **** wasn't wiped out by a passing bus whilst I was bent over (an irregular, undignified and uncomfortable position if I may say so).
Spotted the dribble!
Everyone was totally wrong (including myself); it is petrol dripping out of the drain hole in the boot (trunk).
Great.
Had a replacement tank fitted 3 years ago.
Anyway, rubber gloves on tomorrow and fettle around the derriere to see where it's coming from.
Might light a big stogie before I go in.
