Throttle bushes and down pipes Q's please help
Hi,
My V12 seems to idle a little high, I checked it out & I found the throttle linkage bushes to be missing, so I assume this is the cause because if I "blip" the pedal it idles correctly. I believe it's part no C34388 ?. Is this correct and whats the fitting method, looks like a simple job ?.
Also, the left side (UK) down pipe has a ting blow ( I hate exhaust blows ) and since it's some time I messed with these, is it possible to tighten the pipe to head nut from within the engine compartment ? - I do hope it is. It sounds like a little nip up/tighten would do it.

Replacing the bushing requires partial disassembly of the bellcrank-type linkage. No big deal, IMHO, but a little fussy as some would say
If you get a genuine rubber bushing it'll just pop into place. Here in the 'States, at least, there are some aftermarket replacements made of such hard material that it's virtually impossible to fit them.
Others have made their own replacements or used bits they've found at the local hardware/home improvement stores, or used door hinge pin bushings. Lots of info in the archives
Make sure to re-synchronize your linkages (easy) after installing new bushings

FWIW, on my '88 V12 I could reach the downpipe-to-manifold nuts from above....at least on the right side. Can't quite remember about the left.

Thanks for that, but the part no I put above is only a rubber bush or grommet looking thing whereas the pics on the web on actual cars appear to show a brass cap over the end of it.
All mine is at the moment is the throttle shaft going through a hole in the end bracket, so just what am I missing ?.

I'm no expert on the 6.0 variations but, FWIW, the JDHT catalogs shows only the rubber bushing for the 6.0 V12s....same as the older V12s.
As bronze/brass substitutes are common what you're describing sounds to me like a DIY alternative to the simple rubber bushing
Others will chime in.
Cheers

My 5.3 has the rubber style bush on ONE SIDE!!! All this throttle bush talk prompted me to go look and I'm missing one! It's interesting that the TR-6 uses the same thing only way bigger and the aftermarket ones are rock hard and impossible to put in (on the TR-6) so I had to get creative with some hardware store parts. I ordered one for the XJS this morning for a whopping $4 on amazon.

Got my 2 new ones today, looks like they will simply push in with the help of a small screwdriver etc.
Is it really neccessary to reset the throttle flaps sine they would have been correct prior to the bushes falling out anyway. Surely if this is the case , fitting new bushes would just put it back in the pre bushes fallen out state ?.

The shaft must be moved out of the bracket to install. I have never had problems with the aftermarket bushes from Worldpac or IMC. Once bush is installed, refit the shaft ensuring the same splines are engaged. There is no need to touch the throttle blades (nothing changed their setting) but the throttle rods need to be synched, recheck after warming the motor (as the aluminum engine "grows" significantly) to make sure adjustment is correct.
