Default Trailing Arm Bush Question

Hi Guys

Having got the refurbished Cage back in 'Cherry Blossom' (more on that later) along with other jobs to be done will be replacing the Rubber Bushes in the Trailing Arms, which my local 'Back Street Garage' are willing to do for a 'drink'

So my Question is: do the Trailing Arms need to be facing a certain way up before the old bushes are pushed out?

Is there for instance some sort of 'Taper' that the Bushes go into, so that they can only be pushed out from one side?

Photos appreciated if anyone has them

Cheers!

Alex

There is a lip in one side of the large end. If you look carefully, you will see that the hole one side is slightly bigger than the hole the other. So the bush must be pushed out FROM the smaller side to the large side.
Now for safety, when fitted to the car, I think, repeat think, the lip should be DOWNWARDS, so the bush cannot fall out - not that it ever could, mind you! BUT, I am not quite sure if the arm is symmetrical top and bottom, if it is not (and rear ARB - swaybar - equipped cars certainly are NOT) then the arm has to be mounted as required by the radius arm. Thus the bush has to be inserted as required by the orientation of the lip.
So, as the bush itself is tubular, but the metal core part is not the same each side, the bush must be inserted into the hole in the arm so that when the arm is on the car, the correct side of the bush is upwards. That is the side of the bush's metal central part that locates into the chassis cup is UPWARDS.

Hi Greg

Cheers!

I had a feeling it was something like that

Can I use Aftermarket Bushes or do they have to be Top Grade Metalastic?

If you don't want to do it again, use metalastic. And be sure not to tighten the bolts until weight is on the wheels.

LnR. the large bushing goes in only one way. Greg is correct. There is a very small lip on one side of the trailing arm where the large bushing goes. The smaller bushing side does not have a lip. I found that out the hard way. When using a press the large bushing can be forced over the lip. I removed mine manually.

See this video. Pretty good explanation of how to change the bushes.

The life of any of the bushes is very limited if pressed in without the proper size tools. When pressed in with tools that rest on the rubber they are almost perished at that point. Only tools that push the bushes from the metal ring are satisfactory.

OB
I was (I think perhaps incorrectly) thinking that the radius arm itself is able to be mounted either way upwards. For cars with the rear ARB (swaybar) this is certainly NOT true, they can only be one way up. So therefore my point about whether the lip is on top or on the bottom is probably rubbish, as you are forced to mount the arm only one way! (I have edited my earlier post).

ONLY Metalastik will give you the intended Jaguar-blend of ride and handling, not to mention durability! Do not compromise!!!

OB,

Manners sell original Jaguar and OEM and Poly options for the large Bush. I think that part nos will be:

MHC3170AA for Jaguar
MHC3170AA# for OEM
MHC3170AA*P for Poly

Cheers

Paul

OB - I used OEM as recommended, these were the most expensive part of my rebuild.
Pleased I did as Greg suggested.
That video explains it very well, make sure you press them in with the correct support, takes a fair bit to press them in.
Not letting them get out of line is the hard part but once they have gone in 10mm your away.

Hi Duke

How much were they, as I'm very tempted to buy a couple of brand new Trailing Arms and Bushes Complete which would depend upon the price differential

Brand new trailing arms usually don't come with Metalastik bushings. They usually come with some sort of Poly bushings which will last forever, but make the car harsh and noisy.

OB,

If you buy the arms from Jaguar they come with Metalastik bushes. If you buy from one of the reputable independent suppliers such as Barratts, MAnners etc, you'll have a number of options incl. Metalastik OEM, or Poly.

Manners & Barratts are also "pseudo-Jaguar Dealers". In other words, they can provide Jaguar parts as if they were a Jaguar Dealer at the Jaguar listed price. However I'm not sure if you can negotiate discount from Manners or Barratts on genuine Jaguar parts, but I always get discount from my Jaguar Dealer parts Dept, typically about 15%.

The part number for the arm with bushes is C29310. If you buy from someone like Barratts:
C29310 = Genuine Jaguar
C29310# = OEM
C29310* = Aftermarket

Cheers

Paul
