Default Transmission

I was driving down the highway at 60MPH and it seemed like the trans went into neutral. I shut off the engine, about a minute later I started it and went to DR, the car went a little ways and than did the same thing. I did this for 20 miles to get it home. It's a 1993 XJS with a ZF-a trans. There is a noise coming from the front of the trans. sounds like a piece of tin hitting something. thanks for any help.

im stumped.

can you get a video of the noise?

flexplate? maybe pump shaft?

if it was a 4t80e i would put my money on the forward apply band. not sure if the L even has one.

Any recent work done on the vehicle? Your best bet is to do a line pressure check when the problem occurs. This will make sure your pump is working.

if it was mine, i would start it up, put it in drive, and go WOT to see if it slips out immediately.

Being a ZF trans, I would be heading for the torque convertor failed. At 60MPH it would have been in "lock up", and lock up is what fails on them with age.

I would NOT drive it, SORRY.

I would flat bed (I think that is your terminology) it to a trans specialist. ZF is used in MANY cars, Merc, BMW, etc, so a Jag specialist would not really be required in my opinion.

hmmm. if the TCC failed, then the torque converter should still function in every way. it just wouldnt lockup and your fuel economy would suck.

find the high pressure port.... i dont recall where it is on your trans. a quick google search should show.

My ZF manuals are not handy until late next week when I get to my old office. I did find this link that shows testing. I believe you have the 4H22 gearbox. You can find the trans number on a plate on the side.

I took off the trans pan and the fluid was brown in color. Looked like it has water in it. Can the trans cooler leak into the engine radiator. Also the radiator was this real thick brown stuff floating on the top of it.

DAMN! coolant in your trans fluid. Xp

what do i keep saying about oil coolers.... your transmission is toast and so is your radiator.

you might be able to save the trans with a really REALLY REALLY REALLY good flush from a trans shop, but the damage has certainly been done.

also, youll need a coolant flush ASAP.

If you have trans fluid being mixed with coolant than your radiator mounted trans cooler is suspect. Take the radiator to a radiator shop and they can test and most likely repair it for you.

You trans will need new clutches. Water/coolant will cause the glue holding the friction material to the steel to fail. It is a matter of time before it is 100% done. A flush will only buy you time. Of course it will fail at the most wonderful time.

You need to fix the root cause which is your trans cooler. Then rebuild the trans.

thats assuming that water got all over the clutches. it will surely be all in and around the valve body and pistons.

NM, im an idiot. wet clutch system. duh

Any one know where I can get a good rebuilt trans? I was going to repair the old one by my self but I don't have and special tools. I also think it would need everything from the front to the back. My book states a 4ph22 in the car but on the side of the trans it shows a 4ph24, also a radiator. I have just about everything disconnect of the trans. Hoping to drop it tomorrow. thanks for all the help.

Your best bet is to find a good import transmission shop. Jaguar, Audi, Mercedes and other european cars used this gearbox. They can rebuild it for you.

As for the radiator take it to a radiator shop and tell them what to check for you. They should be able to replace the cooler.

The book states a 4ph22 but it's a 4ph24. I think it's just a upgrade ph22. I just have the top 4 bolts to remove and it should drop out. Not a easy job to do without a lift.

Can't reach the top 3 bolts. Got mad and quit, will try again on monday. Called the Jaguar dealer, he wants 4100 for a trans. Still thinking of rebuilding it myself.

The jaguar dealer will sell you a reman unit. The good thing with that is it has a warranty. However you pay dearly for it. A good foreign car transmission shop will be able to fix it no problem. You can buy parts, manuals and even tools to rebuild the ZF boxes. ZF is German and used in many vehicles. I will look through my old books. I used to have a Jaguar manual for ZF boxes. If I have it I will make a copy and send to you.
