Default Transmission Filter Kit

I brought my 96 XJS to an indy garage and he ordered the trans filter kit. It was the wrong one. He was told that there are THREE different transmissions for that car. That was 3 days ago. Am I going to have trouble finding the filter kit for that car? This is just not right.

Different trans for 4.0 and 6.0. Late 6.0s used the GM electronic 4 speed. The V12s used three different automatic transmissions over the lifespan of the XJS, but only one type in any given year. Sounds to me like the mechanic doesn't have a clue if he can't order the right parts.

As mentioned, there has only ever been one transmission at a time for the V12 and one for the 6-cylinder.

However, there is a problem with the quoted part number by nearly every supplier for the transmission filter for the late 4 litre XJS.

Jaguar themselves caused the problem by incorrectly changing the quoted part number in their system back in 2014. As every major independent supplier uses the Jaguar parts system, they also started quoting and supplying the wrong part number. And they are still doing it!

I spoke with Jaguar in 2014 and told them.of the problem and they could not explain how it had happened. I told them what was the correct part number and they agreed to change the system. Sadly 8 years later(!!) and they still haven't changed it!

So, if you have a 4 litre XJS, DO NOT buy the quoted transmission filter JLM2128. IT WILL NOT FIT! It has a longer pickup that will foul the sump. Do not listen to any supplier who tells you to fit this part. The Jaguar Parts System is wrong!

The one that you should buy is JLM664 which is the filter quoted for the earlier 3.6 XJS. This is also the correct filter for a 4 litre XJS Auto.

Cheers

Paul
