Upgrading Exhaust to get more growl
#61
As to listening to experts, nobody is entirely immune from snake oil, and if you want to have a different exhaust, I say do it and tell us all about it.
Confession time: I always used to put some stuff in my oil called "Oil Extreme". Now I am intellectually convinced that these additives do nothing; but I bought some at the racing car show one year, drove halfway home so the car was really warmed up, had her ticking over in the service station and poured it in. The valve train chatter (what little there is on a V12 at tickover) just disappeared. The Management was with me and she was amazed at the difference. At really high revs the valve train was far quieter as well. So I believe in the stuff and always added it, and would now but I cannot get it anymore. So what does that tell you?
Good luck with the mod.
Greg

You cannot compare V8 to V12, X pipe or H pipe used in V8 applications for improved scavenging due to uneven bank firing but that does not apply to V12.
A V12 will never sound like a V8 and vica versa.
As l mentioned, l have no centre mufflers on my 6 litre and run 2.25 pipes straight through to the stock resonators at the back, still quiet in my opinion at anything less than a planted right foot. Windows up cannot hear it inside and no drone at highway speed.

Yes I have learn't since you are quite right so I actually might just go for straight through instead of X pipe....save the money.
Thanks again for all the input. Got some re planning to do.

when I had my mid mufflers removed and my cats emptied the drone at highway speeds was unbearable in the cabin. Putting in a "H" pipe just aft of the trans resolved that.

No cats on mine and downpipes never had provision for them. I mention that because l have an HSE range rover on which l did gut the cats and l believe the empty chamber left behind after gutting makes a big difference verses just a pipe.

I don't actually have any pictures of these installed on the car, it was late by the time we got it done and I had to get off of the lift. But I put electric cutouts on my car, and they work great. I put them in the center between the two pipes, after the cats but before the mufflers. I love the sound, but that's just me. I think it gives it the best of both worlds; somewhat obnoxious or as quiet as stock with the 2 second push of a rocker switch.
I cut out a length of pipe, these Y pipes fit right over the ends, and then I used clamps to tighten everything back up. The plan is to weld it eventually but I wanted to make sure it would ride around decently how it is (without sacrificing too much ground clearance) before I glued it all together. No problems so far, and I absolutely love the sound. I'll try to get some pictures/sound clip for you soon.

Check this out:
From the website:
Starting on Monday, the Targa Tasmania will run for 6 days. The only Jaguar entered in the full competition category is an XJS that belongs to Mark Hammond from Orange NSW. Just in case you have never heard this weapon before, check this out
NOTE: Heavily modified. Not for the purist at heart

Well...I feel a little silly...
I just got home from being out in the middle of the ocean for 1 month (where I devised my exhaust plans) only to come home a few days ago and see that my mufflers have already been deleted and straight pipe put through!
So at least that is done however they look like stock resonators and the pipe appears to be standard:
approximately 40mm inside diameter is about 1 1/2 inches. Is that how you work out what your pipe size currently is?

I have mid muffler delete, cats cleared out, down pipes empty, "H" pipe aft of the trans, Growler open air cleaners. All that's there is the aft resonators which are straight through, not much difference over stock, not an easy car to get more or good sound out of. Be careful in your choices as you can put a lot of time, $'s and not get what you desire in return.
Jokes aside, and just as a reference because mine's not a V12 ('94 AJ6) I got installed new Magnaflow what they call straight through "free flow" mid silencers and rear mufflers, which have no baffling inside at all and this did mildly increase the exhaust sound; not quite as beautiful as my V8 Jag, but very pleasant in a different fashion. Then, when I installed the 3" Borla tips, the short pipes after the rear mufflers were replaced with 3" pipes as to match the 3" tips, but I've never changed any of the other pipes.
Cheers,

I climbed underneath and had a look. All i have is the rear silencers. Nothing in the middle at all. Looks like they took the mid mufflers out ages ago. Pipe is still small though really 1 1/2" so I guess it was only a minor upgrade to the exhaust back who knows when.

I have a '76 coupe future project in the shed with just the engine pipes fitted. Move it around on property occasionally, sounds great and no close neighbours to worry about, but on the street would be like waving a red flag at a bull around here.

That is awesome! I don't own a V12, but this is, albeit modified as it is, really striking. It makes me think (and this may be material for a new thread) about how a modified XJS deserves to have a place in this car enthusiasts world, meaning there's no right to rate them with disdain as if what they do is wrong because a machine is not stock. One thing that I can clearly see is the apparent superior enthusiasm for performance of XJS/Jaguar owners Down Under than those from our good ol' US of A.
