Hate to hijack but......
Let the kids use my Jag?
Of course!
High School Senior Prom, black tux, black convertible Jag, prom date sitting in the passenger seat. They looked great, had a ball and were the envy of the rest.
To me, this car means so much more than just myself getting pleasure out of it. A good deal of it's value to me, is letting others enjoy it and getting an appreciation for a real car.
So, if it's a special occasion, or just a nice summer evening and they would like to take their date on a cruise along the beach.....of course! I would have loved to have access to this kind of machine when I was 18 or 20 years old.

It's your car and your kids, but one of the reasons insurance is so high for "kids" until they reach the ripe old age of 25 is that they don't have the driving experience or judgment to keep from doing something stupid with a powerful and capable car.
Also, science says that their brains are not fully developed, especially in the decision making areas, until the age of 25 or so. The insurance companies have figured that out too.
Good luck, hopefully your car won't end up like this and no one gets hurt.

scarbro2011,
I know which XJS you are talking about. I called the lady about it maybe a month ago and got the similar story. I ran an autocheck on it and informed her it was a 1990 based on VIN. I thought about going to see it, but the more she told me about it the worse it sounded. Convertible sitting out for years with the the top open? yikes. And the whole maintenance story sounded off. Then she mentioned I would need to come see it on a dry day so she could move the mountains of boxes surrounding the car onto the driveway to get a look at it. Nice lady, but she has a parts car she wants $3k for.
I think that in any decent size city (especially in the south) there are enough available XJSs in running, non-rusted, decent condition for $2500 to $4000 that it's not worth pursuing a non-running car that has been sitting unless it's a parts car for dirt cheap.

Left outside with top down for 2 years....?
I would think the floors under the carpets are nothing but RUST...?
RUN... 100 to 500 as parts... 1000 tops: if he would have let you bring a battery... and test it...
no battery, no test, offer 100...

Horse and Jag comparison!!!
I've owned both and another critter!!!
At about age 14, one h... of a long time ago, as I am 85, a neighborhood pal and I went across town to get a donkey. Eight bucks as I recall. With Fernie, on his mustang mare and, I on my bicycle, we pushed him to my house. That J.... was a s mean as could ever be.
Well, my Dad was a pro soldier, experienced in mules and horses, out an end to that. he got us a retired cow pony from a former fellow soldier. Ok, but old. But, could still stop on a dime and turn on a quarter. But, slower, by a lot than Fernies' "Dolly".
So, we went hunting. A group of guys ala "The Mustangers", but way before Gable's
portrayal, had a herd in town for sale. After matching my budget and the choices, I got "Dusty", a green broke dapple grey young mare. Lotsa spirit and appetite.
Could run with "Dolly". Fernie and I had a ball with our mustangs. That is what a lot of west Texas kids did. Levi's, Tony Lama boots, and scrunched straw hats!!
Jag is putting up an electric fuss.

Even if you got the car for free the repairs could go north of $8000 real easy! and parts are almost non-existant!... just replaced the cats on my 95 V12 XJS and had to source the cats from all over the country... most "available" cats would not fit the car!!! take great care when dealing with older jags!

If you say "Jag-u-are" here in the US, you are typically met with a blank stare as folks have no idea what you are talking about.
What I hear from my British friends sounds more like, "Jag-u-were."
I sometimes call a Brit acquaintance just to hear them say the Jaguar name properly, lol.
Try these words with a brit too:
