Default VIN break question

The JDHT parts catalog breaks the XJS listings into two main categories, VIN 139052 to 179736 and then 179737 to 226645

Was there a significant change at 179737? Is that the beginning of facelift production?

https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/

Cheers

I thought facelifts are from 188105. If you look at the bumpers section that where the rear bumpers change.

I believe it was the beginning of the upgrade to Marelli, Delanair Mark III, Ford column switchgear, the Recaro-style slightly narrower more supportive seats, Electrolux 4-lever wiper system, anti-lock brakes, etc. I have a feeling that not all of these changes happened simultaneously from a given VIN number; but these are the characteristics, and it happened at about 1988 or so.
People like me with pre 139xxx VIN numbered cars must thus be careful on any parts data on the JCP site in as far as they pertain to these items.

The first couple years of face lift cars had the old style bumpers.

I don't think that's it.

My XJS was 1391xx (Feb '87 build) and it had Delanair Mark III.

Marelli was 156xxx (although some literature says 151xxx)

ABS and sport seats were at 148782...for USA cars, at least. This is part of "1989 Model Year" changes for the USA cars

139052 brought heated seats, power lumbar seats, polished sill plates, wood grain ski slope, heated windshield washers, and some other things which I forget. This was the start of "1988" model year for USA cars but is often shown as 1987½ in Jaguar publications for other markets.

The revised stalks came at 165791, along with a tilt steering wheel and airbags, and other smaller changes for 1990 MY. Again, for USA market cars.

Thank you for that list. Maybe should be a stickie?

Aaaannd did you happen to spot the VIN for switch to outboard rear brakes? I think first half of '94. Possibly that's when the oil filler moved up to the cam cover too (deffo 1994 US model year).

Lovely car, great colour. I had thought prod'n started in May but am obvsly wrong. Mine is 6/91 build, 180034. (I love it). By the way, there's a bunch of these early facelift manual gearbox cars in Ontario. It was a good little market for Jaguar.

Greg,

The change to outboard rear discs came at VIN 188105 with the intro of big bumpers and also the intro of the 6 litre and GL480E gearbox. This was in May 1993.

Thanks Paul. Wasn't sure it happened with the bumpers.
