Andy, The theory for the mod, was simplicity, with the XJS I am not a purist so I have modified electrical, cooling and now the ac system. I was on my way to convert the old system to 134, and change the compressor. Now the Sanden compressor, very small and efficient, is were the alternator was. Alternator was relocated to air pump bracket. Less belts and a cooler V without the Harrison compressor.
Greg, I had to cut the passenger side brace, the unit fits very well, fabricating the brackets for the evaporator.

very interesting! I haven't put much research into this topic but it is one I am very interested in. I am currently in Tallahassee, used to live in Key west, and have friends all over FL, so AC is important to me! I've been told the old a6 can supposedly freeze you out of the car, but that was probably with r12.
I've looked a tiny bit into hacking the entire AC from a modern car, for ease of parts, so I could have an r134 setup, but am not quite sure how to do it or which car. I'm not sure just throwing in a new compressor would work, because the entire system is designed for r12, orifices are all wrong and everything else.
These are pretty generic units, right? How did you decide on one for your XJS? Are there are a few different makes and one seemed to fit the best? Please take pics of the evap, that is what I am most concerned with in customizing my own system.
Also, what radiator are you using?

Sides,
I am using a Vintage Air Gen II super evaporator unit with a Sanden compressor. I love my car but was tired of the upkeep to have the AC unit running well. I am using a ford mustang 4 row aluminum radiator, 200.00. After removing the old Harrison, the weight difference is so much the car needs the front lowered.

I tried to look before for radiators for other cars, but if the exit was on the correct side, the entry was always wrong, or vice versa, but that was with me assuming I should have the entry on the passengers side, since there is a lot of free space for a T/Y fitting. I also couldn't find Y-pipes, which I would prefer to a T for flow.
Really nice to see though, I think I would drive to the Keys again with a radiator like that

But there is only 1 inlet instead of 2, what did you do with the other side?
Interesting how well that fits Along with cooler air, one of the XJSs problems is the amount of air. Not sure if it is mostly down to the fan or the ducting, but man it can't push air very well at all....
I'm assuming you aren't going to do anything with the rear floor vents?
