Greetings everyone,
I am now in the process of having a very skilled mechanic give my 1992 XJS 5.3 the once over. Following Grant's excellent cooling system "sticky" all hoses, thermostats, water rails, rail bushes, water heater, heater hoses, water pump, reservoir/reserve tank are being replaced.
First issue: the new water pump I ordered has a larger pulley. See attached photo. Will this pump work for the car, with obvious alterations to the belt size etc.
I am also curious if anyone else has experienced this issue arise?
There is also an issue with the bolt housing at the 4 o'clock position on the pulley; they are different.
The gaskets are exactly the same so fitting it is not a problem.
All comments and suggestions welcome.
Charles
That original pump with the countersunk hole at that 4 o'clock is as made in the UK.
The newer, apart from the pulley, has NO countersunk machining to it.
I would get your man to use a countersink drill attachment and CAREFULLY cut a countersink hole for the ODD setscrew that fits in there.
A normal bolt MAY suffice, but its been YEARS since I was in that area, and not sure of any item that might foul a normal bolt, belt perhaps, dunno.
The larger pulley may not cause any issues, depending on how much. Slowing the coolant can sometimes give the radiator a better chance to cool the liquid than the other way. The size difference would need to be considered carefully.
