I have a 1989 XJS V12, On the left side of the engine towards the front there is a screw on type cap, Mine is black but i have seen photos and most are red. I unscrewed it out of curiosity and all u could see was what looked like some type of drive belt, Whay os this and does anything have to be added to it like fluid.

 

On the camshaft cover?

Sounds like you’re taking about the oil filler cap

A photo will help to clarify exactly what you're talking about.

However, it sounds like the engine oil cap on the LH cam cover of the engine. If so, yes, fluid does go in there - that's where the engine oil goes!
