What actually goes bad on the 96 xjs cam sensor

A fair amount of Indus. Followed my last thread regarding the hard start on my 1996 jaguar xjs.
Most of you know that the issue was resolved with a replacement distributor that had a working cam sensor.
Lets make this real easy and short.
what actually goes bad with the cam sensor. There is only one (1) moving part...... Shaft w/metal Segmented cover.....I’m assuming like the crank shaft position sensor w/couple of teeth missing so it can register a position.
There are no moving parts.
Do magnets loose their strength and that’s the reason it would only register every ~ 10th revolution.
Is it worth spending ~$250 for the repair parts or just buy another $49 distributor w/working cam sensor
Thanks

1996 xjs, 1957 XK 140 Drop Head and every other British sports cars known to man. (Maybe not all)
