This thread doesn't seem to attract much interest these days.... So here's a bunch of pics from me.
I headed out this afternoon to give the car some good exercise, getting her really warm and humming so I can see how much oil is in my new drip pan tomorrow. While I wasn't intending to, I arrived at the entrance to the famous (semi-famous, nationally, or at least regionally...) Chirihama Nagisa Driveway, where you can drive on the sand, just at sunset. So, as I had my camera with me, I couldn't resist getting a few snaps. Being a nice autumn Saturday evening, there were quite a few people parked along the beach enjoying the sunset. I really tried to whittle the number of photos down. I really did.... But I'd just washed her, the sun was just setting, and I had my camera with me, so.... Sunset over the Sea of Japan....
Treated my new 28 year old beauty to a face lift today. My guy has truly mastered his craft. The tape on the bonnet leading edge marked all the dings and dents. She looks fantastic..I'm very happy. My bill?...only $350 USD.
You mentioned dings where the tape areas are, how did he address those dings prior to the polishing and treating of the finish? Was the dent/ding repair above the $350 bill for the polishing job?
Beautiful snaps (a word I haven't seen used in a long time). It must be tough to keep and maintain an older Jaguar in Japan and I fret about mine here in North Carolina.

Thanks to the internet and cross-border e-commerce, it's not too bad. Shipping costs for smaller parts are often more expensive than said part, of course. I have a pretty reliable local mechanic. Taxes are high: the Japanese government punishes people with (a) older cars, and (b) larger cars. Wish I had space for more Jags... and a garage of my own.
I also seem to have rewoken this slumbering thread, which is a good thing....

Your car is making me hate the facelift rear tail lights less and less every time, heres a quick filter and horizon fix. Now I just need to have it on a 3ft canvas print

Funny that you "fixed" the horizon - I actually exaggerated the angle in post. Felt it made it a more dramatic composition. The photo underneath has a flat horizon, and is essentially the same otherwise.
What filter did you use? Looks like you lightened it, showing more of the car but blowing out the highlights of the sunset a bit.
Anyway, nice that your dislike of the facelift rear is improving. I like both styles. I like the basic style of the original, but the fussy chrome strips seem excessive, and I like the blacked-out and very integrated look of the new, but am not so sure the curve at the top of the boot to join the sails works as well as an abrupt cutoff.
I've never been sure about the turquoise on an XJS, but whenever I see a well kept example (like the above), it looks simply stunning out in the wild. What is the stock color for the top, tan or black?

I haven't checked in on the Forum in months,,,and here you are asking a question. All he did was pop out the dents...The clear coat wasn't marred in the process. Thus all I did was wax it. Haven't even run a buffing wheel/pad over it. So the $350 was just for dent removal.

I still do traditional printing in a darkroom, and if I got a result like that in the shadows as my best effort I'd say the negative was underexposed. We call it "muddy" blacks. If it was a film original ( and I know it isn't) in technical terms the exposure is too close to the toe of the negative and the highlights are in the mid point of the exposure curve, instead of at the shoulder. It results in a compressed tonal range. Looks like the grain/noise increased substantially as well - I much prefer the original version!
Yes, the blacks are bit too dark, as I was exposing for the sunset, but that's something that can't be helped. At least not without perhaps combining two exposures. Without a tripod, that would be hard.
One thing that surprised me was that the daytime running lights were so dim.
Trying to figure out a coilover suspension setup. Took out the spring and shock off the driver side and this is the result. Subframe is on a block and car is supported by a jack.
Your last post is a bit cryptic! If you mean you removed the jack from under the car with no spring and no shock in place, then either the subframe will hit the ground or the wheel will jam into the wing. What question are you asking, please, or what point are you wanting to make??
As stated in the "possible coilovers" thread I'm trying to figure out how to run a coilover. Over the last couple nights I removed the spring and shock, bolted the tire back on and lowered my jack to a ride height I'm looking for. Subframe was on blocks to set the height along with the jack. Tire isn't touching the fender.
Now I'll take measurements to see what I can run at what angle and how to mount the coilover on the top side. Ie like you said with the upper fulcram or still seeing if a beefed up shock mount will work

I suppose the rubber bump stops is meant to stop the movement before the subframe hits the road or the tyre rubs ?
