What are your plans for 2020?
Heys guys and gals,
what are your XJ-S/XJS plans for this year? Too late for resolutions, so it is time for actions
My plan? I want my engine back in the engine bay, up and running again. The car not driveable, as I hope to have the rear axle out by end of the year...

No big plans at the moment, hopefully trouble free driving when summer sets on. (well, already driving occasionally when weather permits as winter is not coming this year)
I am looking for some nice roadtrips, to somewhere. Think this is what these great cars are made for... Think Visby would be nice on summer. https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visby
Ferry from FIN to SWE is not bad at all, from Helsinki or Turku.
Or this: saariston rengastie. Saariston Rengastie |
Technically, maybe biggest thing is to get radio problem solved, original Jaguar radio is not working well and current "el cheapo" is not nice at all. Looking for some retro boxes but most of them are way out my budget and to be honest i don't like them -> too much chrome etc etc.

Well last time I started my AJ6-powered XJS, it idled fine but wouldn't rev over about 1600, after which adding throttle made it want to stall. While revving it as high as I could I noticed the cats were glowing red! Could this be an over-fueling problem caused by a stuck injector? Anyway, sorting that is my first job come spring.
In the mean time, I am actively looking for an X300 for my Dad.
P.S. Daim, I love the colour of your car.

Finishing the floor repairs, and the underneath to remove all the rust. Close in the areas around the firewall. Reinforcement of the trailing arm areas. Then install the dash, heater/ac and wiring from the Parts car, and build the 460. Just a little list. I'd like it all done by the first of May. Well I can dream, can't I ???

lts true, im a cheap Canadian and have worked in Osaka for 6mths, shops like ''Don don donkey'' make necessity shopping costs about the same as Canada.
Exotic is relative, the public toilets for example could be called exotic...................... its just so very different from anything most are likely to experience (in a good way). lt is a staggeringly beautiful country to explore.

I've had my XJS for at least four years. I've been doing some work on the cheap. I bought a new set of tires a couple of months ago. I plan to see if I can affordably get my car up to reliable daily driver status. If I'm successful I'm going to start using it, if I'm unsuccessful I'm going to sell it and concentrate on one of my other cars.

Let's see:
1. Get the darn thing back from the tranny shop. Rebuild in 2019 resulted in a functional car, but the tranny still leaked, and it didn't shift how or when I wanted. I took it back, told him I wanted the leak fixed, included a bag of parts for the tranny mount, and spoke with the shop owner about governor mods and how I'd like to see 6000 rpm in first gear. They've been messing with it a bit. It might be done this week. Or it might not.
2. Fix the seat belts. The car is an '88 with the oddball automated seatbelts. Some previous owner didn't read the TSB, probably got stuck in the car and ripped the buckles in half rather than just slide the seat back to get out. I'll be buying a universal mount seat belt kit from Summit Racing and putting in conventional belts. Related to this is:
3. Bolt the driver's seat the rest of the way down. I won't go into a lot of detail except to say that right turns are fine and hard left turns are "interesting".
4. Get the windows working. I have the interior door panel off the driver side, so I can manually push the window up and down. I think I may need a motor for that side. The passenger side I haven't messed with, and I'm hoping it's just the switch.
5. Get the windshield wipers and horn working.
6. Do some cooling system maintenance. It seems to run at proper temperatures now, but it's winter in northern Nevada. I'll hold off on replacing the radiator because $$$$, but I'll do thermostats, belts, hoses, and probably a fan. I don't want to get halfway to LA and find I've gotten it wrong.
7. Exhaust work. I bought a V12 because I want the V12 sound. Center mufflers (or resonators, not sure which terminology is correct) have been deleted by a PO already. I'm thinking the cats will stay for legal reasons and the rear mufflers will go away along with addition of an H-pipe.
2021 and beyond might include a repaint to British Racing Green (It's blue now) and a five speed swap.

There's a great book entitled American Road by Pete Davies, that chronicles the birth of the Lincoln Highway. It describes how an Army convoy leaves New York to cross the country to reach San Francisco. President Eisenhower was a newly minted lieutenant after WWI and he goes along with the mission. In many places there were not any roads at all! President Eisenhower was a booster for better highways, especially after WWII where he got to see what the Germans had done with the Autobahn.
