I use ordinary bitumastic roof sealant. It goes on easily, you wipe it in with a rag, then with white spirit and loads of rags it is dead easy to clean it up so it looks smart enough. For example
3M also make a dedicated windscreen sealer, that is not silicone - which you do NOT want - which is also excellent:

A follow up question. I’ve installed the new gasket and sealed the gasket to the body. Do I also need to seal the gasket to the glass? I don’t really think it was sealed before. I have the interior out of the car at the moment, and pools of water appear where the rear seats should be when it rains, so clearly this isn’t sealed properly.
