1982 US version HE... I have had some various electrical issues, and 'think' I have them all figured out... but the wipers are frustrating me.
I pulled the motor- just used a spare battery to connect, and it does run.. Put it back in- ended up replacing the wiper relay. I had not tightened up things... but started the car, and the wipers worked!!!... Great!... at least the motor ran, and the posts were turning.
So I tightened up everything, put wipers on- started the car- and the wipers did not work. Checked fuses, all were still good. I thought maybe something was binding, holding up the wipers. So I just loosed up bolts, even took the wipers off-- started the car, and the wipers... do not work.
So... any ideas? I don't think the relay is shot- I will pull it again and check. Fuses are good. Is there something simple I am missing?
We have been working on this beauty for 4+ years. She runs, stops, everything 'works' - except for the wipers. Right now- I am not in too much of a hurry- as found out the gas tank is leaking when full. (pulled it, removed pad- we have only been doing everything on 1/4 tank as we get it running); I have a shop building an aluminum replacement... this was the father/son job- so my son has a sweet ride to school for his senior year.... (yeah- what kid drives a V-12 Jag to High School?....)... so any suggetions please.
perhaps some not so secure wiring at the motor, i'm guessing you checked for power at the motor when wiper switch on? below is an extract from schematics i reproduce, hope it's of some help, you say wipers worked after car start up and initial check, was the wiper unit in normal position or upside down - just sitting on sill?
Thanks- The unit was 'installed'... but just set into the opening- not bolted in. I will pull and double check power when switch is on.... after the tank is back in...;-)
Just an update. I took the wiper- motor apart- some slight rust- that I used 400-grit sandpaper to lightly remove. Grease levels were not bad, and found the wiper post, for drivers side was not turning. I believe when we installed the wipers, the nut was tightened too much; pulling the post 'up' and binding the gear against the housing.
Just set it up on vise, and moved the nut to top of post, so I didi not damage any threads- and couple firm taps.... the post is now free and turns!! I have to grease it and reassemble- but I already tested motor and things are working.
