Yesterday, I was working on my driver seat getting it to move back and forth and now it does. I started the car several times yesterday and now it won't start. I can hear what I think is the fuel pump when I put the key in the 2nd position, but I don't have anyone here to tell me if they hear the fuel pump itself running. I also don't see a fuel pump fuse listed. It turns over but it doesn't even try to start.

 

You should be able to hear the pump buzzing inside the cabin. Or step out and open the boot, you dont need a second person.

 

Brewtech, I hear the buzzing in the car, but I was told to turn the key and run to the boot to hear the fuel pump and I don't hear anything. The manual says I should have a silver relay with a yellow-black connector inside the right side panel of my trunk and there is nothing there. It also says that I'm supposed to have a a hockey stick panel with relays and I don't see it either. Am I looking in the wrong place? It is in the boot, right??

 

These pictures are of my car where the manual tells me to look for the fuel pump relay. Unless I'm supposed to take the panel above the hydraulic pump for my roof in my back seat, then I don't have any idea where it is. My car is a 1993 and I think they made two different cars of this model. Half the time this car does not match either manual I have.

It's behind the black hockey stick panel in your second pic as explained in the workshop manual.. The Jaguar workshop manual that I sent you is the right one for your car. Everything in there is correct for your car.

I got the relay out and it looks worn out. I cleaned up the contacts, so just for the heck of it I will see if it made any difference or if my fuel pump is dead. My battery was about done, but I got a short run on the fuel pump and two of the plugs looked dry as a bone. I'm recharging my battery now, when it better, I will try one more time and check the plugs again.

 

Is it possible that you triggered the fuel shut off when working on the seat?

 

mghirsch, Fuel shut off? I have no idea. I don't know anything about it. What can I do to check?

 

Below the A post on the passenger side.
It has a plastic cover and a red button at the bottom.
Push the button, if that doesn't fix the issue, remove the switch and jump the wires.

 

equiprx, Sorry about this, but this car is new to me. What is an "A" post? I looked under the glove box and I didn't see anything with a red button.

 

A post is the first upright where the door hinges are located.

 

equiprx, Just so you and I are on the same page, I have an American, so passenger side is the right side. I have a feeling you are referring to the inertia switch. Mine has a cover and is on the "A" post, but instead of a red button on the bottom, it has a long switch on the top that you would pull out. I tried that and it made no difference. So, now my next move would be to disconnect it and jump the wires, correct?

I jumped it and tried both connections and nothing. So, it's either the relay (which I doubt) or the fuel pump. Most likely the fuel pump. I'll order both the pump and relay. The original was over $500.00 and an aftermarket was around $100.00. Guess I going to buy an aftermarket.

 

The pump is internal, right?
I have a good used low mileage original pump from my 94 donor car.

 

Try jumping terminals 30 and 87 in the relay socket. If the pump kicks on, the relay is bad, if not the problem is either a bad pump or a wiring problem.

(1) The Inertia Switch on the 'A' Pillar on the LHS on a (UK Car) maybe RHS on a (US Car) is Push Down, Not Pull UP

(2) The Fuel Pump only runs for about 3 Seconds, so before you have even opened the door the Fuel Pump will have Cut Out so you will need an Assistant to hear if it's Running or Not

(3) Behind the 'Hockey Stick' Panel underneath the Fender/Wing is where you will find the Fuel Pump Relay which is the Silver One

(4) The Fuel Pump is an Internal One, so before you order another one take a Step Back and Consider that Replacing this is 'The Job From Hell' and if a 'Shop' does it the Labor alone could be in the region of $2,000 - $3,000 and that is not a 'Typo'

(5) There is a Fuse Box behind the Knee Panel inside the Car and one of those Fuses is for the ECU so Test Them all

(6) There is also a Fuse Box under the Bonnet/Hood at the Side so Test all those Fuses as well

(7) If you've never worked on an XJS 4.0L (6 cylinder) it cannot be over emphasized that replacing the Fuel Pump is a Very, Very, difficult Job, that you may end up wishing that you had never started and also end up Wishing you had never bought this Car!

(8) It also might pay to buy a Brand New Battery, as these Cars need at least 12 volts before they will even Start (so that could be your one and only problem!)

Have a look at my Thread 'Carmen Won't Start' Not quite the same internals as your Car but you may be able to pull out some ideas, that also goes into detail about changing the Fuel Pump

mghirsch, IT"S ALIVE!! I did what you said and I heard a whining sound from the pump. So, my next question is, is there another relay that I can use to substitute this one with just to try to start the car and make sure it's just the relay?

 

Not good! I heard my fuel pump whine when I jumped #30-#87, and I just tested my relay and it is working as well, my inertia switch seems to working fine. The only wiring I have been working on was on the driver seat. I don't think there is anyway to connect it the wrong way, so maybe the seat harness go squished under the seat when I moved it and there is a short or I have another problem? I'm going to go look at my seat harness.

 

Well, the seat wiring harness looks ok, so what's left? Just the ECM?
