Woodruff key in crank won't budge

Hey guys,
I've been doing my front oil seal and am stuck...
The pulley is off as if the little cone. The old seal is also out... BUT...
The woodruff key in the crankshaft won't budge. It has even chipped a corner and won't budge one bit. I've tried whacking it with a hammer and punch (even removed the water pump for it). I've tried a chisel as well. I've even tried fire...
I need to remove it to get the sleeve off to replace it (the sealing surface is nastily pitted).
Any tips to remove this little bugger?
Cheers
Damien

Never did it on these engines. On others at times.
Look in a parts catalog to see if it is a straight pin that mates two grooves.
Or a semi circular shape with the curve in the crank snout and the straight edge in the pulley.
If the latter, tap one end. that will create a rocking motion to roll the key out of it's groove.
If the former, no inspirations at the moment. Ice and or heat comes to mind!

Jonathan:
I don't think so. The off set keys are used on the crank gear to change it's relation to the driven cam gear. It changes valve timing.
Changing the dampener's relation to the crank could change timing, if the dampener was used as a signal generator.
As far as I know, this engine uses a more or less conventional distributor.
Apologies for the sermon. I'm amongst the last guys that oughta do that...

On a locking cone type damper it should even be possible to advance it 8 degrees by replacing both keys (if that's what floats your boat)
