If you don't drive much highway it's good, but better 10w40 is my experience.

I would stick to a w40 oil.

Ultimately follow the recommendations for your engine in your manual. There is a temperature band where w30 oils are acceptable.

When I used 5w30 in the past, the engine started to consume oil, especially when driving long distances on the highway. Now back to 10W40 and now have almost no oil consumption.

NEVER, EVER put synth oil in an old motor! Castrol makes a conventional that meets OE spec.

I'm not really a believer in that. Have been using synthetic oil in my car for about 75,000 miles and I've had no engine related issues.

I think it's either an old wives' tale, or synthetics have drastically improved. I tend to think its the latter.

With an oldish car, that has scores of thousands of miles on it already, and using non-synthetic oil during those miles, what I've read more than once is,
switching to synthetic will almost guarantee leaking of oil. That's just something I read in various places over the years. I don't think I've known anyone
who chose to switch with highish miles already accumulated.

I live in Socal and we only use Castrol 20/50. Anything thinner gets too thin in the heat.
