xjs 3.6 (1991) Lifter problem
Hi, One of my Lifters has zero space when measured to the cam lobe.
I thought that the Lifter was hydraulic because of the noise it makes from start up and when the oil fills the lifters.
People talk about lifters being blocked up and they take them out and put them in a vice and squeeze the oil out to get them working again.
They say that the exit hole is very tightly engineered and can block.
Others say that the lifters are not hydraulic and simply have shims to tune the gap tolerance.
Anyone have any clues !!!!
cheers

Firstly, WELCOME, as I notre this is your first post.
Enjoy your car, and your time here, both will be FUN, frustrating at times, FUN, just like life hahaha.
The "lifters" you talk of a SOLID, and the valve clearance is done with shims up inside that camfollower (lifter), and is NOT a 5 minute job by any stretch of the imagination.
They are NOT known to "close up" as a rule, but it can happen I suppose.
Whichever way you look at it the camshafts have to come off and a lot of PRE measuring done to set the valve clearances.
The "clatter" you are hearing on "start up" is more than likely the upper timing chain tentioner, which is fitted to the cylinder head on the outside, just above the distributor, and is a KNOWN issue with chain rattle an these and the later AJ16 engine.
