XJS Car Tax Question for UK Owners
Hi Guys
My XJS Car Tax runs out on Wednesday 31st August
Just when the Good Weather seems to be starting but it doesn't seem worth re taxing it for another 6 months.
Does anyone know if its possible to pay Monthly by Direct Debit for say just a Couple of Months and then Cancel it.
Or are you Committed to pay by Direct Debit for either Six Months or One Year and as such cannot cancel it during that time.

You can pay monthly by dd but only via their Webb site. I just cancel the dd when you want to sorn it. I wont wait for them to do it, before the first of wherever month. I find it the a most convenient way to go as you never know when the ol banger will need remedial repairs

When to Cancel it was my next question, just before the 1st of the month also sounds good to me.

GOV.UK guidance is clear and concise. DVLA will cancel your Direct Debit when you have made a SORN:

Whether this happens in practice is an entirely different matter.

I hate all this direct debit stuff but since I only need to tax her, until I get my other XJS back on the Road.
Currently having the Injectors cleaned and new Spark Plugs fitted by me after a 16 year hiatus.
It seems the best way to go.

Could someone with a Car Tax reminder V11 please explain how this works.
6 Months Tax £129.25
12 Months Tax £235
SORN (if you are taking your Vehicle off the road)
Direct Debit Approx £20.56 per month
Then underneath that it says
6 Months one off Payment £123.38
12 Months Payment £235.00
The Amounts I've shown in RED why are they Two different amounts for 6 Months Tax when they are both 'One Off' Payments.
Why Two different amounts for the same amount of Tax? I just don't get it.

OB,
There's a slight difference in paying by Direct Debit or making a single payment via Debit Card etc.
So if you pay 6 months by DD (single payment, not monthly) it's £123.38. But if you pay a 6 months tax by Debit Card Payment, then it's £129.25. In other words, they'd rather you set up a DD. This means that the tax will renew at the end of the 6 months and the DD will be retaken etc. Whereas a 6 month tax paid by Debit Card will lapse at the end of the 6 month period.
Bizarrely, if you pay for 12 months , it's the same £235 whether you do it by renewable DD or Debit Card.
It's why I've moved all my car tax to 12 months with monthly DD. It's slightly more expensive but much more controllable if you want to SORN it part way through.
Hope that makes sense.
