I don't think anyone has characterized them as being vital.

But, if you want really, really clean coolant, filtering it is one way to get it !

True. I think the more important question is, how clean does coolant have to be? If the temps are fine, then a bit of foof shouldn't be too worrisome. With regular changes, of course....

I think you've pegged it.

Sorry to revise a dormant thread, but I don't want to start a new one if this covers it. I checked my coolant again today, and if anything, it's dirtier. The coolant itself is new - it was flushed and replaced when the atmospheric tank was replaced a couple of months back, and before then, when the aluminium radiator was installed. And yet there are these bits of pale grey foof, perhaps scale, perhaps not, floating on top of the coolant.
The car itself doesn't appear to be running hot - temp gauge is where it should be when it should be (below the middle when cruising, at the middle or a hair over when stopped in busy traffic (98C thermometers). So I assume the coolant still works, but it's still worrisome.

Sometimes a system takes 2-3 flushes to get really clean

Leave well alone, the car's coolant is fine!

Really? Like that? Okay, if you say so. Any chance to not have to spend yet more money is welcome....

I bet if you reinstall the rad cap the problem will disappear.

The main one, you mean? I gave the secondary one a good clean while I had it open, but it didn't appear to have anything on it that could cause this gunk. I'll check the main one and clean that.

No, with the rad cap in position you won't see the 'foof' inside. Therefore, problem solved.

Ah. True. Along those lines, I'm sure welding the bonnet shut would also cause a lot of issues to vanish....

This is true but looking for trouble will always be rewarded with some measure of success. There's a happy medium (or cheerful fortune teller) somewhere out there.

In preparation for installing a coolant filter kit I went and removed the feed lines from the top of my car's radiator, the temp needle was climbing alot today in slow traffic maybe 10c outside...not impressed.

Heres a collection of pictures of what I sucked out with a standard 5hp Shop Vac note the sand and chunks of rubber after letting it sit 5 mins and draining most of it.

Hi Someday

Have you got very hard Water where you are?

I put Tap Water in the Rad of my Grey XJS which was mixed 50/50 with Anti Freeze not realizing that I lived in a Hard Water Area and my Rad Water looked even worse than yours.

But when I was 'Winterizing' my Red XJS Persuaded by the Advice of Forum Members, I filled up the Radiator with a mixture of 50/50 Antifreeze and Deionized Water.

(Even I thought I was 'Bonkers' doing something like that) but so far the Rad Water has stayed Clean, although my New Re-Cored Radiator may have played a part.

But as Greg said, I wouldn't worry too much.

A problem with the V12 is the wet liner configuration, this leaves a lot of the head gasket in contact with the coolant. This is IMO what most of the crud is in the coolant.

When I removed the heads on my spare 6.0L the gaskets were full of holes and very rusty.

Soft, I think, OB. Pretty sure it's soft. I've been keeping a close eye on the temp gauge, which is behaving normally, so I'm not panicking, and will instead get the garage to offer their opinion the next time I take the car in for something. Actually in spring my goal is to take the car to a classic Jag specialist in Tokyo for a general check-up to see what areas need immediate attention and what areas might need attention and what areas I don't need to worry about.

Hi Someday

The Deionized Water, wasn't very expensive in the Scheme of things, if I remember correctly about £10 for 25L and I bought the same amount of Antifreeze.

So that has given me enough to treat both Cars.

Hard Water makes a better cup of Tea though.
