On my father's 89 there is a small I think maybe 1 or 2 gallon black metal gas tank under the battery in the trunk. Due to the gas tank shape, when you run below 1/4 when taking a turn without a surge tank fuel would slosh and you would get air in the fuel lines and the engine would skip. So the main gas tank feeds this surge tank. Then fuel comes out of the surge tank to the fuel pump, then the fuel filter, then to the engine. Everything minus the engine is in the trunk haha

Nothing under the battery except a couple small vent hoses and the posssitive cable to battery...Convertible...just don't get it or how to even get the tank out...the steps covered in my manual are for a coupe.

I believe I've figured it out. On the later Convertibles, there is no exterior surge pump. It is enveloping the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. There are no 'straps' holding the tank in. The entire back of the trunk, behind the spare tire, must be unbolted and removed from the car...then you see the tank...there is no drain. I believe I'll disconnect the line at the fuel rail and use the fuel pump to empty the tank. Then the normal disconnect the two fuel lines to tank (under car), remove battery mount, L&R trunk side panels and lid supports, fuel filler cap, wires and then...remove the tank. I think I may try it and just sloosh a bunch of vinegar in there, then some gas for final rinse and put it in reverse...replacing the main fuel filter of course. Not gonna mess with the fuel pump unless someone warns me otherwise. What a long strange trip this has been.

Ahhh gotcha. That's when they went with a fuel pump in the tank. My father's was mounted the same way. Remove battery, spare tire and large black metal panel covering tank. Then take off all fuel lines. Which all connections were in the trunk on his. Then take the filler neck and vapor barrier off. It has an internal o-ring on the tank neck. Take out bolts and hose clamps and pull it up and off. Then take out trunk sides and lid supports and then slide tank out. His had some loose rust inside the tank but clean and solid on the outside. He opted to send it out to be sand blasted, sealed and pressure checked. Hoping it works out for him. Will report back once we get the tank back in a couple weeks.
