Default XJS rear seat installation

Hi there, I am new to this forum having just bought a fixer upper 1990 XJS last week. I was wondering if it was possible to take the storage box out of the convertible XJS and fit a back seat in its place?

As no convertible owners have answered, here is mine. Early convertibles had the lockers. Later ones had tiny un-sittable in seats. It is relatively easy to swap them over, but you need to find a scrap convertible with seats to do it. I am no convertible expert but I think that there were unlikely to have been any metalwork changes. There may be slight differences between pre-facelift and facelift versions though.

Personally, I like the lockers better!

Default Rear Seats

If distance were not a factor in shipping, I would trade my seldom used seats for your cubby.

Yes it's funny, I would think most 2+2 conv owners would love to have the rear locker as opposed to the useless rear seats. I have owned my 94 since new and the rear seats have only been sat in (with a lot of complaining) twice in 19 years!!

That said there would actually be quite a lot of work involved because on 2+2 versions the hydraulics and electrics for operating the top are in the boot not in the locker. You can't make the rear seat fit without relocating all that stuff and it's associated wiring. Quite a big job.

Thanks for the input guys, It was an afterthought on my part about the seats after I got the car home and my wife pointed out in no uncertain terms she was less than amused I had forgot about where our 9 year old would sit

I think the 9 year old will thank you I had a 7 year old in there who did nothing but whine the whole trip!!

Also I believe to make the rear seats fit you will have to change the seat pan, not sure how easy that is as I think it is structural. I'm sure you could bodge something up though if the missus commands it!!

I was thinking the other way : Put the locker in place of the rear seats in the coupe... or reduce the length of the rear seat to provide more leg room

Pullar - I have a rear seat sitting in a box that came with my convertible.
My wife also wanted my to fit it but I said no thanks.

I believe it is design to go over the roof pump etc.
I can pull it out and take some pictures.

It is for-sale but I am in NZ so postage will not be cheap.
The seat is Gray and from memory it is in very good condition.

let me know.
cheers

hello, I am getting a 1989 XJS (so pre-facelift) with a parcel shelf I’d like to replace with a seat. And the seats are grey. So that could be perfect. Do you have pictures?! Many thanks

I have a set of nearly new back seat bottoms and backs in Barley (AFW?) from my 94 coupe.
PM me for details, pics or whatever.

Greg, et al
After driving my 92/93 4.0 conv 15+ years and 215K miles, I can say the "locker" is one of the best design ideas Jaguar had. It affords inside access to things, i.e. umbrella, windscreen folding shade, etc., that retrieving from the trunk is inconvenient or down-right stupid. Also, it offers a security for items. With the top down it also offers a convenient place to put the occasional grocery bags, jackets, etc to grab when returning home.
Having owned a number of Euro convertibles in the past, none have had an actual back seat. Try putting a baby seat in the back of a facelift XJS with the top up! BTW, "locker" is a good term. I've coined the term "butler's box".
