Default XJS Rear Speakers Quiet

Hey crew. 1988 XJS head unit. I think it's the newer one after 1987 and before the series 3 update cars. I just put my rear armrests/speaker panels back in and tested the new speakers in them. Good new Pioneer speakers BTW. They are extremely quiet on radio. I haven't tried a cassette yet as I'm scared it will get stuck. When I say quiet I mean real quiet and have to put the fader to full rear to hear anything at all. I don't have the front door panel speakers connected yet. So I am wondering do I need to have the front door speakers connected to create actual voluble sound from the rear or is something else amiss. I have also removed the 'coil' looking original fuses from the rear speaker wires and replaced with 20 amp fuses.

On a side note when I turn on the ignition the rewind and fast forward cassette lights on the head unit are flashing on and off. Then after pressing every button on the thing they go off ?? Is the head unit kaput ? Any advice would be appreciated, because if I need to remove the rear speaker panels again now is the time to do it. Cheers

There is a resistor in line with one of the wires at the rear speakers on the stock wiring. It's a few inches back from the connection at the speaker. It looks like a fuse holder, but instead of a fuse inside, it's a resistor. Replace it in the holder with a chuck of metal rod, or a high amp fuse. That should restore your volume.

Mine did the same thing when the radio started to give up the ghost. Got a new stereo and all is well now. I wanted to keep the og head but after searching I found a unit that blends in and allows me ti mimic the factory colors

Thanks guys. I had already removed the resistors and replaced them with 20 amp fuses. So yeah maybe the head unit is kaput. If I find it works at some later stage I'll post here. Cheers
